Okay, this is my how-to on the Home Depot Lip:
What you need is a garage door seal
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/hdp%20lip.jpg
Some 3M red double sided tape
Image comming soon!
Some self threading screws or any screw that is not longer than 1 1/2 inches.
A razor blade.
and thats it! total price for all is around $16.
here is how you do it:
1. raise the car and put it on jackstands. you can do it with the car in its normal hight but I have better clearance whe the car is up.
2. put the 3M tape on the door seal.
pic comming soon!
3. clean the bottom of your car, where the lip is going on.
4. start putting the lip on the side of the car that you preffer and follow the line where the paint ends.
5. you don't need to remove the plastic part in the middle just follow the line.

http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/lip%20how%20to/lip%203.JPG
6. when you are done cut the exess rubber with the razor blade
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/lip%20how%20to/lip%205.JPG
7. screw the self threading well..screws in the beggining of the lip, where it curves under the fog, and in the diagonal parts where the bumper ends and the plastic part beggins. sorry for the dirty picture.

I'd imagine that putting a few extra screws in wouldn't be a bad thing. Also, when you apply the 3M tape, be sure to prep the area with rubbing alcohol for better adhesion.

Yeah I just hate the idea of screwing into my bumper. Do youp prep the garage door sealer, bumper, or both with alcohol?

I'd suggest just the bumper. The door seal should be clean since its new and in a sealed bag, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a quick wipe. Just make sure that its dry before applying the tape.

if you are going to spray the top mount be careful you don't spray to much water because beneath the intercooler is the coilpacks and they won't take kindly to water sitting around them since there is no where for the water to drain.

i used 3m molding tape shown below. i made a double row on the entire strip first then peeled it back as i went along the bumper and yes i screwed it useing 1/2 self tapers. (ENTIRE INSTAL WAS DOWN ON THE GROUND) but i can imagine that is would be much easier lifted.

im guessing that stuff is pretty flexible, so what does it look like while the car travels at say 100+mph??
Okay after 2 week of rolling around with the lip, it ripped off. So I had to fabricate some reinforcement for the middle section. I guess my car is too low but I hope this help.
This is what I made out of some sheet metal I had laying around.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/260/dsc2812yh4.jpg
I made a template out of cardboard just so I could cut the shape of the bottom bumper. It doesn't have to be perfect but close enough. I didn't have any issues with the side, just the middle section of the bumper so I only reinforced that section with all five of those strips. Here is what it looks like.

first off i gotta say i red lip black rims looks bad ass on the white, and the depot lip compliments the grille extra nice.
i installed my depot lip a few weeks ago in no time and it looks sick, best part is u can still drive the car like its got no lip whatsoever, i love not having to worry about crackin a $600+ bumper fitting.

Had a friend do it at his shop last night--not the easiest of things, as you have to drill out some aluminum rivets to remove the original lip. Once that's done, pretty easy. My friend attached it w/two sided tape and some plastic rivets. Looks really good for $10!

Crap. Working overtime at the firehouse today, so I figured I'd get this done today. Stopped at HD on the way in and they didn't have the 2 1/4" hard plastic lip, just a 2" soft foam lip. I test-fitted it and it just didn't look right; the crease was not angled sharp enough and it basically stuck straight out. Guess I'll try again later. Or go to Lowe's.

mysleeper6
12-29-2008, 10:42 PM
Yeah, I noticed in the photos that most people (maybe all) seem to be using something I wouldn't describe as hard plastic---but that IS what the OP's picture says...anyway, it was really the angle I was more concerned about. It just didn't look right.

12-30-2008, 10:54 AM
Yes, I am referencing the bag only; I don't think the OP ever refered to it that way.
Went to Lowe's when I got off shift this morning (one room of fire, started in a dryer, extension to upstairs apartment; car fire, 80's Bronco, fully involved upon arrival; couple of medical runs---thanks for asking! :) ) and found the Frost King brand used by the OP. The bag looks I dentical with the exception of the ommission of the word "hard". So, I'll try to get this done today.

Can anyone confirm or deny that the Speed has an extra trim piece below the front bumper to attach to? I have a 6i model and the I believe a lip installed would have the same "hump" in the middle that the painted bumper has.

i went to home depot to pick up all this stuff last week. home depot didnt have the exact rubber used here. they had mostly vinyl stuff and the rubber they did have was too soft, and was not nail on.
i drive .2 seconds down the street to lowes and found the exact same one from the OP. i havent had a chance to put this on yet, but does it just attach right underneath the bumper? or do we have to like fold it over on anything?

I think every one is using the side that is depicted as slanting on the bag in the first post to attach to the bumper. When that side is attached you get a slight angle out from the underside of the bumper and then the little lip is pointing back toward the car.
has anyone done this on a M6i 06 Sport?

I think this is addressed on the previous page.

I had the same experience (Lowes). I did fold mine and roll it up on itself before installation to try to accentuate the crease, but I honestly don't think it made any difference in the finished product.

04-16-2009, 03:31 PM
well honestly, the paint is holding fine to daily driving. the problem is my car is too low, so i keep scraping the driver side on my work's steep ass driveway. so obviously the paint is coming off there, as well as the rubber is getting destroyed very quickly. this will be coming off once it starts to look too ghetto, lol...its a shame cuz it looks great in person, love it, just not durable enough

Was finally able to install mine today (although it is technically a Lowe's!). I used two strips of 3M tape, as well as their adhesive promoter which really lets the tape grab. I have used this system before so don't expect any problems with it coming off without using screws. I mounted mine differently from most, with the part of the lip you can see only the angle (not the vertical piece on the bottom). Hey, if I don't like it I can change it!

Good call. If you really want the carbon fiber look, and I'm with you I like that look too (I'm lookin for a CF trunk currently), just start saving some cash. The other nice thing is that you are helping the performance of your car as well by lightening it, that is if you're replacing oem parts with CF anyways (not so much if you're just adding them but whatever). Good things come with hard work, and lots of money... :D

Ya, I'm in college so I'm not much better off than you. In terms of debt, I'm way worse off actually haha. But money comes in due time. Nothing goods comes easily (name that quote lol). And you usually get what you pay for. So have patience, get a job and enjoy the little things. When I was in highschool, I didn't have a lot of money, but I had a lot of time compared to now so I spent it keeping my car on a shine and learning as much as possible. Just read up on everything you can and learn, so when you do have the money, you know what's up. That and there's a lot of how-to's on this forum and other inexpensive things you can do to maintain and upgrade your car in small subtle ways. Good luck with your protege bro.

I have mine on by just putting all 4 screws in..
If you get the double sided tape to adhere well you would be fine without the screws I think..
If for some reason you don't screw it on and it happens to come off atleast its a cheap fix..

I just did mine today. I had some leftover black caliper spray paint from my buddy's Mustang we did last week, so I used that to paint one side of the 3M tape roll so the leading edge didn't stick out like a sore thumb. I also used 11 pop rivets with washers (also painted black) instead of the self-tapping screws. Came out pretty excellent.

Think the new shape of the lower bumper will prevent me from doing this? There is already a little lip there
it pretty flexible. just go for it.
its funny how this stuff goes around the internet world. While I haven't done this to my ms6 yet, I did it to my previous car:

I said it before and I'll say it again.... that cooper was off the hook!! It's where I got the idea for my user title... lol. I was thinking about doing this mod, but no point as it's winter, I heard they fall off at this time anyway...
thanks, lol... I ran my through winter, even plowed some snow with it...never fell off, but i had the self tapping screws too, with tape.

Just lost my hd lip last night.. I was coming through a parking lot and the snow raped the front end of my car.. The lip was just hanging there.. We got about 18-20" of snow though where I live..

how does this hold up with the elements over time?
It is designed to be used on the bottom of a garage door to form a weatherproof seal, so it is made to face the elements. With that said, the material will outlast your car. How long it will stay on the car depends on how well you install it and your driving habits.

I did mine today. It was easy. It does look nice. I may have to do adjustments as time moves on. It is an easy fix over time. I would like the AE one with the side and rear lips but so expensive.

I can't find it here in Jersey.
Been to Lowes & Home Depot.
The best they have is the soft rubber version but otherwise, same spec's.
It seems very flimsy and believe it will come off at highway speeds.
Any suggestions?
