Hey this might seem like a really stupid question, but what do you guy's hold your rpm's at during a hard launch? Also do you just dump the clutch or ride it just a lil bit during launch? I've tried a couple times now to launch this thing but it just has so much traction it feels like it's gonna rip out the axles when i'm doing it.

you have to slip the clutch a little. I launch at 4k.

launching too hard is not a good idea in this car. i dont remember exactly what people have been breaking, but i think you could snap the rear axle or the transfer case mount or something like that.

dont just drop the clutch.

Thats one of the things that pisses me off about this car. A Good launch is one of the huge benefits of AWD cars. I never see evo's or sti's have problems launching but for some reason everyone says our cars will explode if you launch them. For that reason ive only launched mine like 3 times in the 10k miles I have on it.

shit i launch my car at every stop light,(not really) but i do like to get off the line pretty hard. when i do i try to launch @ 4k rpm and slip the clutch just a bit. if im lucky ill get a bit of wheel spin and shortly after a hard pull.

I dont like to launch either but it does shave like at least 1/2 sec from 0-60.

I've launched mine once, and I don't really plan on doing it more than a few times.

Those guys with evo's and sti's launch, but also replace a clutch at 45-50k usually. We'll just blow the rear axle or rear diff and deal with it.

I might actually pick up the TT or SU diff mount, and then reconsider it.

I couldn't get the launch down when I took mine to the drag strip. I was scared to really let it go, so I was always slipping a bit, and I only felt I had a good launch maybe once out of the 10 or so runs I did. It's a bit different on the sticky track than on the street, but the 4k slip sounds good to me too.

yeah i was actually under my car the other day just lookin around and checkin stuff out, and i can't believe how thin the diff mounts are. Even the diff housing itself seems pretty thin and cheap. I know the back end only see's a max of 50% of the tourqe but you'd think mazda woulda built it up just a little bit better.

so what is everyone going with now the TT or the SU diff braces. which is better.

they are different. SU is the rear differential brace. TT is the front differential brace.

The longer you slip it the worse it is for your clutch. So really your afraid of letting it go but its the slipping thats burning your clutch.

Thanks coyfish, I'll keep that in mind when I get it back to the track next spring.

Sure. Be careful though because letting it out too fast is bad for the rear diff's as others have stated in the forums. Try to find a little balance.

I rev it to about 3500-4000 and slip it for like 1/2 a second.

hmm really because my cousin broke his rear passenger side axle in his sti 2 months ago doing a launch. so yes they have problems too

i always rev to 4.5K and slip and then dump it. ive done this plenty of times at the track and i never smell clutch afterwards. i wouldent do this if your car was stock because u cant get enough airflow in and out of the engine and this is how u will blow your clutch.

Are we talking about doing the launching with or without the DSC on?

OJ Bartley
11-03-2008, 12:43 PM
superskater - do you mean you need more flow through the engine bay, or more air into the engine itself (ie better intake/TMIC, etc.)?

caprisun - well, you can try it with the TCS on... and end up like me my first time at the track with the engine screaming at 6,000 and the wheels refusing to try to grab no matter what gear I put it in. I had no idea what happened at first. I think that ended up being a 28 second run. As soon as I came back around to where my buddy was laughing at me, his mechanic came up to the car and said "you left the traction control on, didn't you?" (headshake

This hasnt been brought up much but has any1 disconnected the black box? I hear there is a box for the awd system and if you unplug it your rear wheels wont engage and its just the front. I would like to see some1 launch it with just the front wheels :) ....I wouldnt try this myself

I heard you can also just engage the parking brake one click and it won't transfer anything to the rear as well... but I'm not going to try that either. :)

Came across this on another forum and its true.

When your driving with light throttle pull the e-brake up 2 clicks and its in front wheel drive. I tried this and spun my front tires.
