View Full Version : People who can't keep their vehicles clean...

...I just have to vent a little.
I had a second date with a young lady the other day. She is young, very attractive, but when I got into her car, there was no place to sit! She doesn't work out of her car (like some salespeople), so I have no idea why she would have so much trash everywhere. It wasn't like the car was filled with normal items --- it literally was garbage. Used Starbucks cups, fastfood bags, cans / bottles, etc.
I just don't understand how people let their cars get this way. It certainly smelled a little, and frankly makes me question what kind of house / apartment you live in.
I mean seriously...If you can't keep you car clean... What else might be dirty...

Oh beleive me, this is not that uncommon. When I was detailing (15 years) I would come across cars that I would turn down the work unless they cleaned out everything from inside first. There was no way I was putting my hands into that mess without charging a premium. I also have some family members (not being sexist but they are all women) who keep their cars like that as well. Smell like ass and the drive through. LMAO! I cant do it, makes me crazy. My wife heads down that road sometimes. Just clutter turns in to trash. She thinks she will get around to cleaning it out and then doesnt. Thankfully she keeps the house clean as a whistle and I take care of the cars.
Awesome Avatar by the way, love that movie!

My question is, why weren't you driving the Speed3 on the date? :) J/K I think people who do not regularly upkeep their cars shouldn't own them. It's one of my pet peeves to get into someone's car and it smell nasty and not be able to put my feet anywhere. It doesn't take long to regularly maintain the cleanliness of your car. If you do it regularly, it won't be a disaster and take the entire day when you do get around to cleaning it.

I am reading this thread at a very opportune moment, since yesterday I detailed the interior of my car. I do that pretty much every week. Such a stress reliever, it's unbelievable! (cryhard)

...Is a disaster...It's crazy and I actually feel a little odd that my car is the only one that is clean. You could eat off the carpet. I vacuum when I have the least bit of dirt on the carpet and loose my mind if the least bit of coffee splashes on my center console. Others have crap everywhere.
If I leave my wife's car alone for a week or two it becomes a pit. I can't blame her though she transports the kids everywhere and compared to some "family cars" her's is immaculate. Still finding gum wrappers, cherrios and marbles (my 3 year old loves the damned things) make me wince. And yes for some reason her car smells like a locker room. Not sure why, but it does.
At least the materials Mazda uses clean well- except for the carpet, whihc requires a bit of work to pull up all the miniscule dirt and dust.

I have a buddy like this. He drives a Mazda Tribute, yet can never drive us around because his car is filled with shit. I mean, clothes, football pads, random junk. He has more things in his car than his apartment.

I feel the same way. I keep a cooler in the back so if I go fetch lunch there's a place to put it so the car doesn't smell like LUNCH. I have a favorite burger joint whose burgers are very "fragrant" with the onion smell. The bag goes in the cooler so the car doesn't smell like onions. Keeps the food hotter, too.
There are several people at work who keep their cars totally trashed. There are two who stash stuff in the driver's seat when they get out, and move it to some other part of the dump when they get in to drive. One has a nearly-new Corolla which still has the four-month-old temp tag, 'cause he doesn't want to take five minutes to put the "real" tag on.

I got one of the Mazda rubber trunk liners for my MS3 and also have the cargo net, so I always put food and stuff in the back.
FYI the rubber cargo liner that is for the regular 3 hatch will fit in our car as well. Well worth the cost of keeping it clean back there.

I don't wash the exterior of my cars nearly often enough, because I have a raging case of arthritis combined with a raging case of lazy and a raging case of distrust for commercial car washes.
But I cannot abide odors & clutter in my interior. It aggravates me, and would embarass me if I went to drive somewhere with a passenger and they had to pass the time playing "What's that smell?" or had to push aside the McDonald's bags & Starbucks cups to find carpet to put their feet on.
When I'm the passenger in that slob's car, it takes all my willpower to pretend I'm not repulsed by it. Up until last week, I drove a MINI Cooper (Not a hamster cage, but thanks anyhow) so I didn't always have the option of saying "Hey let's take my car." Now I can reasonably expect to carry 2-3 other adults, so no more excuses.
If her car smells that bad, all I can say is strap on the scuba gear when you go for your first dive.

I keep my cars clean of trash and everything but I am lazy about the whole washing/waxing and vacuuming thing unfortunately. My car isn't a complete mess inside, but it isn't 100% shiny all the time either. :)
My last car was an '02 Hyundai Accent that I gave to my brother last year and to this day it smells a bit funky because 3 years ago while on vacation for 4 days I accidently left the windows cracked open. It rained every day I was gone and I came back to around 2-3 inches of standing water in my car. Took me forever just to get all the moisture out of the little beast.

I used to be like this, leaving tons of wrappers etc in my volvo front seat. There were computer parts and maps and crap in the back, and the trunk was full of camping gear (in case I needed to lam it, wtf?). Then I installed my first custom radio kit, and I saw the light - I kept that car clean, vacuuming the interior, etc. I made simple rules, like for 1 cup coffee/burger in, all the others have to be out first, etc.
Now with my new MS3, I am hyper anal. NO EATING. NO SMOKING. NO CRAP. I like cutting and juking in the car, and its distracting to take a corner at 30 and cups and shit roll around. Now the car is like a NASA clean room - if it's not bolted on, it can't come in. That little coffee spill screams at me, I'm like Monk now!
I guess it's all about being invested in it.

Speaking of bad smelling cars, DO NOT order a Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza from Papa Johns and decide to go pick it up.....my car smelled like onion and garlic for a week. luckily i had some of that "new car smell" spray from Wal Mart and it took care of it quickly.
And as for dirty cars, some people just have no pride in their cars. I go nuts if i see trash in my MS3. NO ONE eats or drinks in the car

Simple rule: Anything that comes in goes out. Not hard since I refuse to eat or drink in my car. It's not a rolling buffet and I can survive a drive across town without liquids. I hate the sweat ring they leave in the bottom of the cupholder.
Years ago, a friend offered me a ride home in his brand new Eclipse GS-T. I was excited...until I opened the door to step in. After he cleared the shit off the seat, I sunk ankle-deep in cans, bottles and cups. The dash hadn't been dusted in years. I was speechless. Don't know how people stand to ride around in a dumpster...

I eat and drink in my car, but I make sure it's not anything that will stain (i.e. only water) and I make sure to take everything out. My parents got me this little hand held Black N Decker vaccum so I can vaccum up crumbs. It's neat. Only like about 6 inches long, and does the trick.

I completely agree with all the above posts. But I would just like to point out that we all probably have a skewed opinion due to the fact that we are ALL slightly or completely obsessed with our cars. We spend hours a day, mostly when we should be working, on here discussing anything from serious maintenance issues to hidden MPS logos that we have just noticed.
I keep one of those small tubes of Amor All cleaning wipes in the glove box.

I hear what you are saying, but I am not talking about some dirt / small pebbles on a carpet and some dust on the dashboard. I am not that fastidious when it comes to my own car. I am talking about using part or most of your car as garbage can. One of my sisters does the same thing, and she claims it is because she works from her car. I don't get that. My ex-girlfriend said the same. My sister is a lawyer and my ex worked in telephone sales. How do either of those justify having your trunk and back seat so full of junk?
Oh...and Kane... I liked the scuba diving comment. Funny stuff!

I say it's either a V6 mustang or a 90's Chevy Cav.

My wife is bad also. I try to clean the inside of her car every weekend because if we decide to sell or trade it in I want to get the most for it. I also have to wash it because she'll wait like a month or two and i can't stand for a $38K car to look to car look like $10K junker. I drink and eat in my car but you wouldn't even know. I get a lot of compliments about the new car smell so I must be doing a good job of keeping it clean. I guess as someone pointed it out that we love our cars and wished others would take car of theirs like we do ours.

I actually keep all three Amor-All products in my car: Window wipes, general cleaning wipes and exterior detailing wipes.
The general cleaner works the best, the exterior wipes are great for quickly removing bird droppings and bug guts but nothing more. The window wipes are useless. Not large enough or heavy enough to drag along the window. I inevitably end up thorwing three together and hope they don't form a useless clump.

Gas stations are the most convenient places for removing clutter. Especially if they have the locking pumps. You can just clean the car out while it's filling up and you don't even have to worry about changing the bag!
