Seriously wasteful. I don't understand why they weren't at least parted-out. Reuse trumps recycling every time.

Not all got crushed.

2 are here in ORange county and are being built into race cars. almost got a 3rd but the boss wouldnt let any get out. (Mazdaspeed)

Didn't cost Mazda a nickel, I'll wager. The shipping company's insurance carrier, maybe.

Does seem a shame. Many things could've been reused -- wheels and tires for a start. A similar thing happened to a load of Volvo XC-90s, some Porches, etc., in the English Channel. That ship sunk, and I believe the manufacturers had it blown up so no one could salvage the cargo.

Although I knew about the Cougar Ace I never saw this video. Brings a tear to my eye. So sad. There was one cool shot toward the end where the Mazda emblem on the front grille of one of the 3's caught the sunlight as the crushed car made it's way up the conveyor into the shredder. As if the last glint of "zoom-zoom" vanished. :-(

I can understand why they didn't part them out. Too much labor cost to take them apart by hand. With the extraction technology available today it would be more cost effective to separate the metals from the textiles and plastics and recycle the raw materials. Ironically some of that steel etc will make it back into another new car.

Still I see no reason why they couldn't reuse the alloy rims. I need a set of snows! :-)

Stripping the cars for parts will have costed way too much (labour cost) compared to crushing and recycling the materials for $
