After hydrolocking my car I am paranoid to reinstall the CAI but I hate how the car feels now with the stock air box back on. I am thinking about fabricating a SRI using the mscai thats collecting dust in my storage room. Would there be any nasty side effects to doing this mod. I think I am going to cut it about 3 or 4 inches past the MAF housing . Anyone done this before or have any suggestions?

Someone on the forums cut an Injen down... I've been thinking about this lately but I'm sketched out to screw with the MAF sensor and I HATE CELs.
Not exactly a derail, but can anyone tell me if using a Speed3 SRI with the Speed6 bracket sets off CELs?

I don't see any problems with cutting down the length of the tube. I'm assuming you're talking about cutting past the MAF so it stays in the exact same place, right? I haven't been under the hood in a while, but I think I remember there being a decent length of straight pipe between the MAF and the filter. Just make sure you take the pipe off the car before cutting. Those metal burrs would be hell on the turbo lol!

Derail but Mazdaspeed EMS!
Mazda needs to make a Fuso-style cab that we could mount to modular bodies. A Mazdaspeed ambulance would pretty much complete my life...

you'll have to cut it about an inch or 2 away from the maf because you'll need room to get the filter on. you don't want the tube extending farther then the neck of the air filter or you will cause flow problems and lots of turbulence on the MAF sensor.

i did just the past weekend with the corksport FMIC. cut it about 1.5 inches past the maf housing... just enough for the filter.

Dr. D, any pictures of that, i used to have the corksport and thought about that so i'm curious how it turned out.

i will tell you one thing my car pulls so much harder without that stupid box... couldn't be happier with what i did, its a whole different animal. never again will i think i have nearly as much air flow with a panel filter than a cone style one. granted i'm using a blitz filter right now but still a cone will flow more than a panel.

you gotta do a little homework kiddo... no. 1 the corksport FMIC kit comes with a ram airbox specificaly designed for the piping sceme b/c there is no room for a CAI. no. 2 CP-E designed their system to work with their CAI which is basically the same as the rest of them. no. 3 the only way the make anyother air intake setup work with the corksport is to custom a SRI which is what i did and im my opinion it is much better then all of them b/c with the old airbox and FMIC i took a friend of mine by a wide margian with the CP-E, we were mod-for-mod just different manufacuers. my car now pulles a whole lot harder with the modded SRI. now don't take what i said the wrong way just letting you know where i am coming from. here...

Just get one of these and call it good:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AEM-AIR-BYPASS-VALVE-2-75-w-CLIP-20-402s_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c39Q3a 1Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2 ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem250300054815QQitemZ25030005481 5
It prevents hydro lock. In the event your filter is submerged or soaked in water it blocks off the intake and re-routes the air through the bypass valve

Try a hydroshield?? I live in florida and it rains a good bit. I drove around town in pouring rain for a couple hours and when I got home I checked the filter. Under the hydroshield it was 100% dry. Im still very carefull around puddles but I dont understand why more people dont buy the shields. 25 bucks that puts me at ease and can save your behind if you hit a unexpected puddle.

you can't run that on a turbo car. it even says in the description "not to be used on forced induction vehicles".

Oh ok, I did not see that. Then I would say go with a hydro shield like mentioned above. I have herd they work really well. Here is a link to one on ebay:

There has got to be bigger situations than what people are claiming for Hydrolock. Standing water greater than 8 inches and idling in it. Just dont get it...

yeah that's how I felt until 3 months ago when I hydrolocked my car. But if you think its not an issue good luck to you and your car : ) Hopefully you have a good dealership that takes car of you like mine did :)

What were the TRUE circumstances though? Were you sitting in high water and started the car? It would be almost impossible to hydro lock without being in an awfully big body of water. I used to run a front mount CAI in my GTI and lived in Portland ORegon, we get more rain than Boston and I never heard of Hydro lock till I started driving Hondas/Mazdas 5 years ago. We get plenty of rain here in Michigan. I bought the hydro shield and am just careful as one can be. Do you know how much water you got into your motor? Also, your insurance should cover Hydrolock if the dealership doesnt. How did you get the dealership to cover it in the first place?

the TRUE circumstances where large puddle of water on left hand side of the highway. Only thing I could do was let off on the gas and coast through hoping for the best. So based on all your experience with rainy weather your conclusion of hydrolocking a car impossible would be inaccurate... I had the hydroshield as well and that did nothing to stop it.
