I was reading a thread on a site, and I cannot remember which one. Mabye this one. I was wondering if anyone has heard about getting the ECU flashed on the protege 5 to improve gas mileage, and performance. Or swapping it out with the mazda 3 ECU? Just curious if anyone has heard of this, and might know where I could get this done? Thanks everyone.
I keep hearing abuot this custom map stuff for our ecus but havent found anything. a 3 ecu definitly wont work since those motors use DISI which is a completly different fuel and timing system that uses direct injection. we dont hah.
I think the best way to do it is to pick up a Split second or somthing similar used if your wanting to be thrifty and run it parallel to your ecu. then you can tweak it as you want.
you could also try to get a mp3 ecu.

I read some posts on mazda3club.com, and it seems like some people are saying that the mp3 ECU will work with our cars. Although I am no Mazda tech, I would have no way of knowing unless I try. I have been trying to find more information on this and have only found a couple things on it. I will just have to keep looking.

Yes the MP3(as in Mazda MP3 Protege)ECU works in proteges/P5's. They are a popular mod cause they give you about an extra 15hp and they give you a much smoother powerband. Bad thing is though they are hard as heck to find and when you do they are pretty expensive. So ya if you can find one go for it.

Yah, over at the mazda3club forum there was a guy that was going to buy some ECU reflashing equipment from the dealer and do a group reflash deal for everyone and reflash are ECU's to a MP3 map but it did not pan out and he ended up selling equipment to Protege Garage. So you might want to cantact them and see if they will reflash your ECU for ya. I might have to do that as well

There have been various people over the years claiming to be able to reflash p5 ecus to mp3 specs but I dont think a single on ever delivered. I think the going rate these days for mp3 ecus if you can find one is around 200-300 which is much less than most other options plus you wont have do to any dyno tuning.
Another thing to consider with the mp3 ecu is you'll have to use premium thanks to the advanced timing.

Okay, I just spoke with someone from the protege garage. Their are no reflashes for the protege 5 ECU. It would be benifical to swap the protege 5 ECU with the MP3 ECU, although you would have to use premium gas, and it would not improve gas mileage just HP. And i'm not sure how much extra HP it would add.
a split second would be under $400 and you wouldn't need to really do a dyno tune. in fact its recommended to do a good street tune first.

give it a read. the offsite article on tuning is a good read too.

It gave you 10 hp and if you can still find one, it's only good on a manual transmission.

I did the MP3 swap, and, it did give a mild bump in HP, but nothing amazing.
What it did do is allow the motor to just run better all around. Smoother in all aspects of the powerband.
Yeah, it runs higher grade gas, but it's worth it to me for the car just running better
^^^there are no issues with the vtcs or whatever that is??^^^

The MP3 is made without VTCS, but both myself and another member here have been running with VTCS still in the intake mani and no issues
Removing it is always an option but i just don't have the time for the car to be down, so i am awaiting yet another member to finish his VTCS removal and port/polish, then I'll be snagging his old Intake mani to throw on my car while I do the same to mine.

what, you can only use the mp3 ecu with the manual transmission protege 5? It won't work with the standard shift?

manual is also known as "standard"
you cant use the mp3 ecu on a protege w/ an auto tranny.

That what I thought, I was a little confused. Thanks for clearing that up. I think I might want to look for an mp3 ecu and give it a shot.

Who has done the mp3 ecu swap in their protege 5, and what kind of change have you noticed with the performance in your car, also do you have to run premium gas, or can you run plus?
