(crazy)(gun)

On Saturday, a gas station attendant broke my gas cap. Today another gas station monkey poured gas all over the side of my Scout II. And now to top off my frustrations with incompetence, a landscaper backed his beater-ass chevy into my parked MS3 as I was walking out of a store. I'm glad I busted him because I have a feeling he would have bounced otherwise

Well, at least they have insurance and it'll get fixed. But still, this will show up on this car's Carfax which just sucks because this car was otherwise flawless.

Just had to vent...

The same F-ing thing happened to my dads Speed-3... When it was like 2 weeks old, but left front... and it was a beater work van too, and my dad watched it happen just like you as he was leaving a store, and like yours the insurance paid I believe $700 for a new bumper and paint.. I can't stand fucking idiots that can't drive!!!! My truck got backed into at school the other day, no damage except for a couple scratches to my plastic bumper and I didn't even realize it till I got home when I walked past the back end I saw broken tail-light plastic just laying all over my bumper!!! Ahhhhh.. The negligence kills me.. and of course the ass who did it to my truck fled, so if I see a broken tail-light at school, hell will be paid for a hit and run son..

Man that really sux! Don't sweat the CarFax... very likely it won't show. Can't you pump your own gas in Oregon?

Oregon doesn't let people pump there own gas. They figure it's better to let teenagers and burnt out meth heads do the job.

Sorry to hear that man, I drive and park defensively all the time, because I know most people don't care...

As far as gas, I would drive to another state to get gas. I'm serious (drunk). That is just not acceptable.

Several states are like that. Wonder what that's supposed to accomplish? Years ago, I had some knuckle-dragging mouth-breather try to put gas in the oil tank of a Kawasaki motorcycle. Fortunately, I stopped him in time.

I didn't know that still existed...

I remember being in high school and having a few pumps that were half self-serve and half full service. Of course the full service was slightly more expensive per gallon, but the women loved it. Most guys went to the self-serve.

I can't believe OR is full service only. What happens if you don't want the guy to touch your car? Or what if you have a "special" car with a fuel cell in the trunk...?

How do you guys pay? The attendant or can you pay with credit/debit?
I guess you guys in OR don't have quick service...

I've heard a few reasons why it's law here.
1. The general public is incompetent to pump their own gas.
2. It ensures jobs.
3. ???

You won't get arrested but if you get out and start pumping someone will come up and tell you you're not allowed to do that. I live close to CA so I think it's pretty common that out-of-stater's try to pump their gas before they are "informed."

The attendants will usually let motorcyclists pump their own gas and if they don't, the rider will generally go to a station that will. A lot of rider's stay on there bikes while filling so you could imagine having an attendant pump your gas would be awkward for everyone.

I've seen people with super nice cars (Mercedes AMG, etc.) pump their own but I've usually just stayed chill and haven't had any problems until recently. That's all changed and I'm only going to stations that will let me pump my own.

As far as payment, the attendant asks if your paying cash or card and if you have a card, they run it at the pump just like anywhere else. Service usually isn't too slow but sometimes it can get ridiculous.

My wife was driving the scout when the attendant spilled gas all over the side of it and I didn't notice the other guy cross-threading my gas cap until it wouldn't come off when I was in BFE.

I park defensively and in this case parked in the corner of the lot where it seemed safest. I guess you can't plan for all variables and idiots. When I saw that dude crunch my bumper, it was all I could do to avoid assault charges. But you could imagine my verbal barrage...

Damn it much be retard drivers month I swear. Rush and I both got rearended(nothing major on either car) and my gf got backed into her passenger side doors(her passenger front door will need to be replaced, and back door a new skin)!

$500 fine for pumping your own gas you that you're paying for to put in your own car! That's just mental! I doubt the chances of getting caught are that high though.
We have some full-serve gas pumps here in Alberta and I avoid those like the plague. If I have to go to one because I'm near empty, I just tell the guy I need to pump it myself or I'll limp to the next gas station if I have to.

Actually Oregon is very conservative on most issues.

This policy is in theory supposed to prevent people from being exposed to the fumes/handling the gas...and as stated before..it provides jobs for numbskulls....

Sucks...I've heard this from a number of Oregonian car enthusiasts...basically it just plain sucks..and there is not a "real" reason for it....

I just thought of a solution for Oregonian's. If you're really nuts, walk to the gas station and bring a gas can. The gas attendant can spill and F-up all he wants. Walk back to your car and fill up your own tank. =P
I know I'd probably be anal enough to do this if someone stripped the threads on my gas cap or spill gas all over my car and didn't tell me.

To the OP: sorry about the bumper. At least it looks only to be the bumper cover and it will be paid for. Hopefully it's quick and painless.

Tigard, wow... I forgot Oregon pumps your gas for you. LMAO! Havent been in OR. since 99. I am in Detroit now so no worrys. Push that bumper out and wheel it. See what happens. I hit a dear in my uncles Mazda Tribute. He was all upset till I pulled the inner wheel well, stuck my leg up there and kicked out the bumper. Like new barring some minor scratches. You never know!

Funny, when I first saw the post I thought, "Oh this guy must be in Oregon". Sure enough. When will the madness end? I just traded in my A6 for an M3 and all the Oregon Audi guys bitch about that law too. It's got to end eventually, right?

bummer indeed... it's getting bad out there w/ tards & mouth breathers. even when you're simply parked people will gladly ram their shopping cart into your car. some people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. just for curiosity, how much was the estimate for bumper & paint?

Could happen unless you're really paying attention. I was hella remote last weekend and had to fill half a tank on 87 octane because that's all there was.

@KOSMOS, that looks familiar.

@mazdaspeedster3, maybe if I couldn't collect on the dude's insurance, the car weren't so new, and I wasn't so type A about it, I'd do something like that. His insurance is taking 100% and the car is already in the shop. They gave me a rental cobalt.(ugh) Besides, the quarterpanel got pushed and my tire's rubbing. Eff that.

@Bobospeed3, I traded my A6 in on this car. Don't you have the same ride?

@elgaspo1, the estimate came in a couple bucks shy of $1500.

I too, was "informed" in Oregon on my roadtrip from San Antonio-california- washington state drive about the no pumping your own gas thing.

Funny thing was, I passed several stations trying to get out of tipping a full service station/reflective vest wearin employee. Started pumping, before the lecture came. Turns out, your not expected to tip either.

The guy across from me was getting his motorcycle filled up. After the 'cant pump your own gas lecture' he said "yea, they wont let you pump your own shit here...you have to take a test or something".

I also heard that while they wont let you pump unleaded, diesel was ok for you to pump. I havent verified that however.

So, yup...as far as I know, it's Oregon and New Jersey that wont let you pump your own.. .

Wierd.

whats funny, is when students from new jersey come to school in my area, and for the first time they go fill up their car, and wonder why noone is outside pumping their gas, or they will go into the gas station and ask for 40 in so and so car, and the clerk just looks at them, ok, so go put forty in it...

They have NO idea how to pump their on gas...

Totally sympathize on the damage. That's a cryin' shame. The complete, blind ignorance that some people drive with is astounding. I hope the repairs are perfection and that your tormentors suffer a justly painful end.

Parts of Long Island won't let you pump your own gas either, but its a township thing so all you have to do is drive five miles to the station the next town over...

I have family in Albany, OR... I do my best to gas up before I cross the border and try to make a mad dash for WA before I run out.
Usually can't make it if I have to run the whole state north to south (on the way to Cali or somethin').
I cringe every time I have to let anyone pump my gas.

so yesterday i posted commiserating w/ the OP about his bumper damage caused by a moron who didn't look where he was backing....today karma almost caught up w/ me, cause i have my own tale of woe & near-miss.

i drove out of my subdivision, came to a complete stop, getting ready to make a R turn onto the main road. saw an suv driven by a middle-aged indian woman [dot-head, not feathers], she had the R blinker on, indicating she was going to turn into the subdvision road from where i just came. i usually am very careful and ignore people w/ blinkers on, waiting for them to complete their turn before i pull out.

well you guessed it. i ass/u/me - d this woman knew what she was doing w/ her turn signal and drove off. sure enough, the soccer mom continues straight, and blinker be damned. came literally w/in a few inches of kissing bumpers. (gun)

i was able to stomp on the brakes and stopped halfway in the road; she swerved, changed lanes and continued straight. for a coupla secs i thought about catching up w/ her & regaling her w/ a few choice epithets, but decided if i did that she might just copy down my license plate and report things as she saw fit.

anyway.....happy friday to us all (drunk) & watch out for the idiots on the roads. they're growing like shrooms after a hard rain.

Yes, you can pump your own diesel. Flash point is high enough that by law you're allowed to do it yourself, but most station owners still freak out when I try filling up my F250 here. Once they realize I have 85 gallons to pump they usually let me do it myself (eekfu).

The law is bullshit but I'm used to it now. Usually service is fast but if you're at a station with really low prices you can wait up to 10 minutes before and after they start the pump. I just avoid those places when I can, and if I get really fed up I start doing it myself, it gets them over to my car really quick.

Yep, Elgas. Never trust a turn signal. The ditzy b*tch was probably on her cell phone and the signal had been on for miles.

09-25-2008, 08:12 AM
Exactly why I don't acknowledge blinkers or trust the person using them. What do people not understand about them. It's either watch out here I come you have to let me in or nah I'm just driving around with it on forever. Blinkers are not a weapon morons. I usually use mine after I change lanes just to fit in with the blinkers don't mean shit anymore crap. I don't put myself into positions of needing people to allow me to get somewhere, I'm already there before they can hose you when you try to use them as intended. People who use 2 blinks when they're already halfway into the other lane cutting you off can drink ball sweat. BTW, it's nice to have a beater truck that everyone else has to worry about instead of me worrying about all the other morons trying to keep my car nice. But I keep mine off other people's shit unless they wanna play games then it's on. Double meat front & rear bumpers 2 tone roll barred kraziness FTW! Balances things out. I'd be takin some lectures if I needed gas in OR or NJ. Fuck that full service mandatory shit! All kinda stupidity rolled up in that crap. That being said, sorry for all the moron inflicted damage posted upinheeya.

I live in FL, but recently did a road trip in my MINI Cooper S (The one I traded for an MS3 last night) thru NY/NJ/PA. Having spent my childhood in the NY/NJ areas, I was aware of NJ's ridiculous full service laws. But after spending a week in NE PA, Northern NJ and NYC, driving about a thousand miles in the process, I managed to only stop in NJ for gas ONCE.

I just don't trust the "professionals" to give a damn about my car & treat it properly. Not that it takes a lot of effort to do so.

Living here in FL with all the blue hairs & illegal immigrants from the 3rd world who learned to drive on the back of a burro, I won't even get started on turn signal usage... suffice to say that when I become Supreme Overlord of the Known Universe, there will be some changes made...
