View Full Version : 44 MPG in MS3

I ran a couple of tests in the last few days. It turns out that if you drive in ideal conditions, plain road on cruise control and no traffic (no lane changing, no touching the brakes) at 45 mph the computer shows an average of 44 mpg!!! I tried various speeds for about an hour at the time, and here are the results:

Speed Fuel Economy

45 mph 44 mpg
50 mph 39.5 mpg
55 mph 37 mpg
65 mph 31 mpg
75 mph 27 mpg
85 mph 24 mpg

100-110 mph drops around 20 mpg.

Anyway, I was shocked this engine can do over 40 mpg. Of course, that was the fuel economy showed by the dash computer, plus all the driving was done on the expressway after 1 AM, no traffic, no braking, no accelerating and no passengers. The engine has MS CAI installed and the temperature was around 60F.

well, if u go 80 u get there twice as fast instead of 40.... and use twice the gas lol

notice. if you average that out. you'd get around 28-30mpg highway.

that's what most of us get (well, those of us who drive normally and don't have problematic engines)

Take 2-3mpg off those numbers using the computer, since it's usually always optimistic.

/\ +1 to all of the above posts.

You could probably get even more out of it if you drove it in a certain way (talking about hypermiling).

yes, my computer in my car says any where between 29-30 mpg on a 6 hour drive going 75 mph

Be aware the computer is at least 10% optimistic. The only way to accurately determine gas mileage is to fill it "to the brim", drive it and fill it "to the brim" again, then do the math. My MS3 got 30.4 on a trip during break-in (slow, varying speeds). The return trip was after break-in, averaging ~ 72 mph. That mileage: 28.8

Same here. I have found that by calculating it at the pump when the car says an average of 31mpg on freeway trips, I actually log 28-29mpg.

In the city, I've been nailed to 21mpg in very spirited driving around town. However, at the pump and with a calculator I'm at 19-20mpg.

Overall, still very good considering the performance available and the fact that I'm not being bashful with the power.

Contrast that with my 300+hp GXP v8 that will loaf along the freeway in 4cyl mode at 75mph at 26-28mpg real world but once in the city 12-14mpg :( Add as much fun factor as I've been with the MS3 and it would be even lower.

The boost (pun intended) is the MS3 will easily pull on my GXP from a 40 roll. She would however pull back hard once past 75mph. Would be a fun run on the highway.

Well... my 44 mpg was an experiment. My average fuel economy is 20-21 mpg. It is hard not to hear the turbo whooshing.

How do you tell what the computer is reading?

Trip computer if your car has it.
GTs came with it, and it can be activated if you have an 07 ms3 sport.

I highly doubt that this car will see 44mpg under any conditions. Mine sure has not.

the computer in my car (being a sport its my brain) says it don't give a fuck about mileage I guess I'm getting around 12-14mpg

I hit 37mpg avg on a tank via hypermiling methods. Was fairly accurate. Calculated about 36.5 mpg and trip computer showed 37.3 or so. I had only got on it twice, and it was very brief....that was one of the hardest things to do in my life lol. Now I just drive normal and occasionally have fun and I can get around 27-29 avg in city

shaving your entire body does nothing for fuel mileage BTW. My jewels are hella itchy too.
