View Full Version : Three questions...Coolant Temp and MAF

GUys and Gals I don't know if U get nasty hot weather like me(south side of PR=107 degrees in a very hot day and 98-99 degrees on a regular day, after summer) here is my first question:
There is a manufacturer that I can get a 160 degree thermostat? I looked in SU,PGARAGE between others...they only offer the stock one(180 degrees I think) do you guys know if there is another car that uses the same thermostat and maybe ADVANCE ,Peb Boys,Autozone etc...may have in stock...

Back in the old V8 days my dad use to drill the thermosthat (not the center, but drilling little tiny holes just near the gasket...) seems to work beacuse it drop down the temp.,but don't remember if it regulates to a certain temp or just drop down the temp and when you hit the gas and the engine gets loaded it will rise back coolant temp to the stock thermostat temp, sometimes it overheats....(THIS HAPPENS IF YOU REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT,AT LEAST IN THE DSM'S)
which is not good at all, having that UP-DOWN situation in the coolant of my engine...

Second qUESTION:
If I'm still stock(no big upgrades, just Bolt ons like: FMIC,full downpipe, custom 2.5 exhaust with High flow cat,CAI,BOV with hard pipes relocating my MAF)

Will I need to buy the AEM F/IC (which is the one that I like) before installing all of these?

Relocating the MAF can give me problems with my stock ECU(check engine light?)

Thanks for your guidance on this issue...Im just a young PADAWAN talking steps to become JEDI!

I wouldn't suggest switching to a cooler thermostat if your main concern is just providing improved cooling ability to the engine. A cooler thermostat will attempt to maintain the water at a lower temp, but it will do little or nothing to help you actually shed waste heat. It's my understanding that a cooler thermostat is usually used mainly as a way to help reduce predetonation by keeping the in-cylinder temps down, and it can actually negatively impact combustion in some cases (correct me if I'm wrong there...?)

If you are worried about an excessive load on the cooling system, you could drain/flush the coolant system with pure distilled water and a bottle of Redline WaterWetter or a similar product. Pure water has a greater ability to carry heat out of your engine than a water/antifreeze mixture, and the WaterWetter will further improve the heat transfer situation while lowering the potential for corrosion in the coolant system. The primary downside to this setup is that you're not protected against sub-freezing temperatures, which shouldn't even be a concern in PR.

Dunno about the negative impact on the cumbustion...I can tell you, when I run my smurf when the temps are pretty cold (=78-81@night) and the cars is touching 1/4 (just above that mark) of the coolant gauge the cars feels just great!
I knows that pure water is the best medium (aside alcohol) to Heat exchage...had to verify about the redline product saving my coolant setup from rust!!!

what about the other stuff?
thanks and regards!
