The rear motor mount on my 98 Protege 1.5L is totally destroyed and needs to be replaced. I've got the part, but when I went to change it I had no clue how to get the old one off. There's a bulge in the firewall directly above two of the nuts I need to loosen, so there's no way to get a socket on it, or even a closed wrench. It appears that an open wrench from the back is the only possible way to get it, but even then with that I can't get it down onto the nut because of the firewall.

Usually I don't like looking like an idiot, but if someone wants to tell me something obvious that makes me feel like a moron for having to ask, that would be great. I'm totally lost on how to get this thing off.

Thanks!

I heard one guy said he was able to do it but only thanks to his "girly" hands being so thin. I think he must have left it not tight enough, though, because you can't get a good enough angle like that to tighten it enough. I took that very mount off but only from a car whose engine was removed. From what I could see, you will have to, at the very least, rent or borrow an engine hoist to hold up the engine. You will then have to remove the subframe/crossmember that the engine's weight sits on(by way of the mount). You can do it but you can see the complication involved. My neighbor has an engine hoist but not everyone has that facility. You can also put a long thick block of wood from fender to fender and a chain around it and attach it to the engine. That also has to be done right.

I didn't actually use the engine hoist even though I've removed an engine before with one. I didn't use the wood either. I had a transmission shop install it for me. Just call all around town to every transmission shop and tell them you don't have a problem with your tranny but need the lower mount installed. In case they don't like using parts bought by you, let them know you bought the part and were going to do the job yourself until you realized you don't have a tool to lift the engine's weight a little bit. Some places don't mind at all if you bring in the part and a few actually welcome it. They will give you the "we won't guarantee the job with your part". That's ok. Call many shops until you get the best price.

Don't go to a shady place or where you didn't feel comfortable with the way the guy sounded. I suggest a tranny shop because they constantly have to be removing those things to remove transmissions in order to repair them.

You can't go wrong with my suggestion. The money you would save doing it yourself you would pay for in the work and sweat of doing it yourself. You wouldn't fee you really saved the way I feel with other jobs that are worth doing yourself.

Nasa has confirmed that laptops carried to the ISS in July were infected with a virus known as Gammima.AG. The maple story mesos (http://www.ugamegold.com/c_Maple-Story-Mesos/)worm was first detected on Earth in August 2007 and lurks on infected machines waiting to steal login names for popular online games.
