I own a 2003 Protege ES with the Automatic tranny that has the manumatic function. My question to you good people is this: What would I have to do to get my RPM's lower on the highway? Mazda really dropped the ball not putting in a 5 speed automatic imo, and I'd really like to drop the RPM's. Any help is appreciated.

Get bigger tires.
Swap in a manual transmission.
Basically, those are your 2 options- either of which will cost more than any fuel savings you'll see to justify spending the money to "save gas".

5th gear in a 5spd isn't much better either but I just got 34mpg all freeway with boost set at 20psi. Maybe you need a slightly lighter foot on the gas especially in stop n go?
New plugs and drop in k&n wouldn't hurt.

If you want better mileage at higher speeds, overinflating the tyres can help (not safe) and aerodynamic mods such as a front air dam, an undertray, wheel spats/fairings, boat tail.
