Based on an old thread that I couldn't find anymore about using bigger Oil filter from 626 v6 which is an "upgrade" for MSP's.
Since I couldn't find that thread I started to search and did found more then 626 v6 Oil filter that can be an "upgrade" for MSP's.
The deal is, better taller or more wider oil filter ??
The measurements are based from K&N Filters, as far as the equivalent from other brands they are not exactly the same size but will thread in for sure.
stock filter specs:
HP-1008 - OD-67mm, H-76mm 11-17psi relief valve
"upgrade" filters spec's:
HP-1004 - OD-79mm, H-88mm 11-14psi relief valve
HP-1006 - Od-71mm, H-95mm 11-17psi relief valve
HP-1010 - OD-71mm, H-95mm 13-17psi relief valve
HP-2007 - OD-97mm, H-104mm 8-11psi relief valve
HP-4001 - OD-76mm, H-151mm 23-35psi relief valve
any feedbacks are welcomed (mswerd)

mazda filters are very good quality and are cheap there is no reason to spend double the cost for something that will be changed in less than 3 months. HP-1008 filter is the small filter equivalent to protege, protege5 models oem filter. Most dealers including my own just carry the 626 filters because they cost the same and are larger. There isn't much of an argument to use something else other than personal preference.

have you noticed any difference with the 626 v6 filter ??
Do you have/know the 626 v6 oil filter measurements/specs ???
This is an upgrade that might be suited when you bump the power higher then stock other wise it might not be necessary.
At any rate those are K&N measurements since there's no measurements for any other brand that I could get in short time.
I did go to autozone to measure M1, BOSCH filters myself and they are not the same size for sure

I use oil filters for the 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0T.
They are a direct fit, a bit bigger, and increase my oil capacity to an even 4 quarts. I've been doing this for over 40,000 miles without a single problem.

Matrix - what brand oil filter are you using ??
Any change in oil pressure from the "upgrade" oil filter ??
EDIT: I checked K&N oil filter for 03 WRX and its size isn't much bigger then MSP K&N oil filter, wrx is just wider but shorter.
Is there more room for bigger O-ring oil filter ?? or is it even with the edge of the plate with 03 WRX oil filter.

People knock the brand here, but I've been using FRAM Tough Guard oil filter number TG3593 (For 2003 Subie WRX 2.0T). It has worked great for me so far, and in a few days I'll be picking up a magnetic oil drain plug to help keep the oil cleaner.

fram also has the ph7317, same diameter but almost double the length of stock. I've been thinking of switching to that but I never thought about the pressure relief valve being different

i use the mobil1 larger oil filter from a v6 626 and would recommend it. the first time i did an oil change i was surprised by how small the msp filter was.
