So I went to Autozone to buy a low temp thermostat. I bought it and they sold me a gasket for something that looks like a coolant distribution block that connects to the motor just to the side of the stock bypass valve. After reading some posts though, people say the thermostat is on the water neck on the lower radiator hose. I'm not sure which one it's on. Anyway, I tried taking off this distribution block and got 3 of the 4 bolts off and realized that I couldn't get the 4th one off because of an egr pipe. I didn't read any posts were people complained about that. I didn't have the tools to take it off so i put it back together and said f* it. So basically, where is the thermostat, on the side near the pulleys on the lower radiator hose or is it on the upper radiator hose near the bypass valve? Please only answer if you have already changed your thermostat just to take out any confusion. Thanks.

follow the lower radiator hose up to the engine block, and remove that housing - should only be two bolts. the thermostat is in there.

Yup, there it was. Isn't the thermostat supposed to be on the top radiator hose though? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure every other car I ever changed one in was on the top radiator hose. Is this why our cars coolant runs so hot?

Not on the MSP, its on the lower hose. The oem set up does not use a traditional gasket, the thermostat has a rubber piece around it. Two bolts and its off. 180* is the stock t-stat range.

it doesnt matter, really, where it is, as long as there is one. the thermostats function is only to cause a restriction to allow the engine to warm up before the coolant goes through the radiator to cool it down.

So T Stat range is 180 ish then what happens if you put a higher ranger T state? Will cause the motor to over heat or go higher than normal??? I think mine is bad because all my coolant is in my over flow tank. Autozone show to have a 195 degree 192 and 180 degree. What protege would use a 195 degree stat?
