View Full Version : 2009 Dodge Challenger vs Speed 3

Hey,
I just visited the thread with the Dodge Challenger, and damn is it sexy. How would the Challenger compare with the Speed 3? In terms of say...acceleration, handling, price (SE trim), and also...the insurance prices for a 2-door (considering it as a person's first car).
for a first car? neither. terrible idea.
buy something cheaper and not nearly as fast as a first car. even if you "think" you're a really good driver, you havent had to deal with all the traffic and other generally stupid people who share the road. get yourself something more reasonable for a first car, then upgrade. you'd only be setting yourself up for disaster.

I agree with imac. Plus if your first cars really quick then you haver a harder time going up from there. The new Challenger SRT is quite a bit quicker but the "base" ones that are coming out I'm not too sure, I see Challengers all over the place though and I'm almost sick of them already, overpriced in my opinion.

If you're not going to get the SRT-8 or the R/T, at the least, the car will be slow. The SRT-8 tested weight during Road and Track's test was over 4,300lb. The thing is a BOAT with wheels. Although, with 425hp/420lb-ft torque, it manages a 13.0 @ ~110mph, but I'm sure people out in the "real world" at tracks will crack into the 12's stock. I would think the R/T model will manage to crack into the high 13's at about 100mph with 370hp. The V6 model won't touch a Speed3 in acceleration. It weighs ~700lb more with 13hp less. It'd be lucky to be in the high 14's. Handling-wise; the top of the line SRT-8 did 65mph through the slalom vs the Speed3's 69.6mph. This is all magazine racing, but I would suffice to say the Speed3 would rule on a tighter road course where anything less than the SRT-8 Challenger (R/T, much less SE) would have a hard time flexing its muscle. These are two totally different cars. I would not waste the cash on the SE unless you're hard bent on getting a wannabe classic car that seems more tailored to a person going through a mid-life crisis.

I also agree with imac. Either one is going to be a lot to handle for a first car. I got enough points in my first car, which was an '88 Acura Intega. Lord knows I'd be in jail if I had this little beastie back then.
Also, especially in the case of the Challenger, these cars are going to attract a lot of unwanted attention that a newer driver doesn't need to deal with.

First Car implies young. The LAST thing you should have is a fast car. I really don't care how mature you think you are. If your parents buy you ether one they should be brought up on charges of child endangerment. But that's just my opinion and you don't have to listen too it :)
With that said. They are 2 totally different cars. The MS3 is quick and practical, the Challenger is Fast (SRT8) and drinks gas as faster than Shia Labeouf drinks shots. One is a hatch the other is a muscle car. The MS3 you will hardly get noticed, the Challenger will have people at every light ether asking you question or wanting to race (or both).
Not to mention 50k vrs 22k.

..I wouldn't buy a Challenger SRT for a first car. In this day and age I wouldn't even get one as my primary car. The mileage sucks I got about 15mi/gal in my commute which is about 20 miles each way. granted I was stomping on it alot.
I bought the car as a 2nd vehicle to take to cruises. I am 39y/o so my insurance is right at 92/mo. I would not want to see the cost for a male under the age of 25. I'm sure they would be raped.
As far as the performance....The SRT wastes the 3. The 40-100+ time is ridiculous but I will say this.... The Speed is more fun to drive as it compares to driving a go-cartwith ballz verses truck with bigger ballz
The Speed 3 but just doesn't get the attention the SRT gets but it's new and the attention will soon wear off.

agree, if it's your first car. get something cheap and used. drive for a couple years or so or graduate from college and then think of getting a nice new car.
you'll thank us later...unless your parents are loaded then what the heck get a speed3. you'll probably get to enjoy it for at least a couple months.

LMFAO
umm.... everybody seems to be missing the fact that the challenger he's considering is the SE trim. this thread should have nothing to do with the SRT8.
that said, i'll reiterate (mind you, this is coming from a 21 year old).
i didnt particularly enjoy drinving a 115hp celica for 5 years, but i'm hella glad i did. kept me out of a whole lot of would-be trouble. not to mention that i've already totalled one car (i hit a deer, had nothing to do with me, just bad luck) and had to take the hit because i didnt have comp on it, so just imagine what that would have done to my wallet if i was driving a new car.
cliff notes: for a first-time driver:
brand new car = bad idea
fast car = bad idea
brand new fast car = much more badder idea

^^^ very true. And the fact that you'll have every single person looking at you wondering "what did that little prick do to deserve that car?"

i think the same thing every time my neighbor drives by in his 05 3-series bimmer. best part about that one is that the reason his parents got it for him is because he totalled the first car they bought him and needed a new car to drive.

First car ... How old are you?
Reason I'm asking is I wanted a fast car right off the bat when I turned 16. Ended up driving an Izuzu Rodeo throughout highschool (Loved that car!)
I ended up getting a Mazda 3 when I turned 18 and drove that for a few months, put down 6,000 miles on it and decided to upgrade from there.
Wouldn't reccommend either for a first a car. Get something simple and don't go overboard.

Consider for a moment that you can buy TWO MS3s for the price of an SRT-8 Challenger... the acceleration performance difference isn't that huge - within a few mods to the MS3, the MS3 will handily whomp the Challenger in handling, and personally I prefer flying under the radar, which will be absolutely impossible in the Challenger.
I had a VW Rabbit Diesel as my first car. 52 galloping horses, 4 speed, redline at 3400 rpms. It topped out just shy of 70, accelerated to 60 in about 22-23 seconds, got 53 mpg, plenty of room in the back seat. Perfect first car!

Get the fastest frickin car you can! You are young, you will have plenty of time to recooperate from that horrible decision. I am not kidding, get it. You will kick yourself later for not and going to smart route. You may never have another oportunity to own a car you might consider a "dream car".

Lmao, when the kid pulls up to the stop light and is challenged by some ricer to a race and he accepts and "controls" his car directly into a ditch or lightpole, he'll have people like you to thank for encouraging him to buy his "dream car" as his first car.
Listen, it seems to me like you are a little better of family wise than most of your peers so do yourself a favor and buy yourself a "nice" but not something that you will regret crashing too much cause the chances of you crashing your first car are pretty high. buy yourself and early model 3 or something. trust me, in four or five years you will be glad you did.

first year challengers are only the srt-8 models, and have no factory options (including not having a manual tranny).
the challenger srt-8 is actually faster than the charger srt-8 (im fairly certain) even though it weighs more than the charger. the challenger is built alongside the charger to be more of a sporty option.

I agree. Nothing says you have to buy a beater car, but something that won't get you easily killed while flirting with the hotties in the left lane. Plus, once you have a few years of driving experience under your belt and can afford a nice car on your own, you'll appreciate it a lot more.

I worked at a porsche race shop from age 17-19 owned a 944 and borrowed my bosses' cars all the time. I left that shop with 5 points on my record and didn't get any of them in my 944. Young kids in fast cars are garunteed trouble in some shape or form. P.S. That was some of the most fun I've ever had!

Put it to you this way. I'm 42 and I would NEVER buy a Bike as I know I like to go fast at times and I would eventually kill myself on one.
Being mature is knowing your limits and accepting them. Being immature is knowing better and then still doing it.
Now if I was 18 again, I would probably get the STR8 because even though I knew I would race the shit out of it, I would convince myself and my parents that I would not.
I had a friend in high school that built his 69 Camaro with his dad. It was a really nice car, mint condition, PNP'd and Blueprinted. Fast as hell.
To this day I wonder if his dad still regrets giving him the car. He had it about 6 months before he wrapped it around a tree doing 100+ MPH around a broad sweeping curve thus killing himself and his best friend in the process.

You see, the issue with this is that you have to LIVE to grow older to tell these stories. I have quite a few of them to tell myself. However, the only reason I'm alive today to tell this is because I was LUCKY. Nothing more.

Everyone has a story like that. Granted the car helped but it wasnt the one pushing the peddle. I had freinds killed in a chevette for jumping rail road tracks. THat car had 85 hp. It isnt always the car but the driver. I am a 38 year old that always made the good smart decisions and am not just trying to catch up. Had I had the fast cars in my early twenties I would be over it by now. LOL... Who am I kidding.
Do what you can for yourself based on what you can afford, what you want and how the future looks. Be prepared for the worst while making every effort to make the worst be minimal. An SE model will not be out of control in my opinion, no worse than a NON Gt Mustang or something along those lines. IMO I would rather have a mazda3 gt or something anyway, nicer, last longer, better gas mileage and resale value than any Dodge you can purchase today in that price range.

Because I'm 27 years old, have made my mistakes on a SLOW car and know better now. If I had this car when I was 16 or 17, I'd be in a coma to this day most likely.
Not everyone does stupid things in a car, but why encourage them to get a car they can get themselves into trouble with faster?

Can the OP even drive a manual trans? What about parallel park?
I'm 19 and a few weeks from getting a Speed3. My first car was a total piece and I thank God that it was. First time drivers do stupid shit (like trying to drift and hitting a curb) no matter who they are. I'm just glad that I had a good economical car to get me through high school and my first year of college. Now that I am working full time, have some money saved and aren't as immature as I was a few years ago I feel comfortable buying this car.
Bro, dont get a fast/expensive car for your first car. Get a Hyundai or a Scion or someting.

as of right now... since this is your first car, you don't know what kind of driver you are. Slow and conservative or "goddammit, you can't change lanes in front of me, i'll show you" type of a driver.
i hated my first car ... 86 mazda protege .. it was slow and ugly.
I used to have all my friends in the car and drive through dips at 50+ mph to see how high we can jump. That probably destroyed my suspension. Then i got ran into twice which the second time totaled it.
Second car was a 95 toyota avalon, parents gave it to me because i had no car. Ended up crashing into someones wall trying to take a 15mph turn going 45mph, i made the turn but coming out of the corner my tires gave up, they were bald, went sideways into a wall.
So i say just get a ok car to drive first, find out what kind of driver you are and your second or third car, get the car you want/deserve/payed for.
even though i wanted to pick my own car from the begining, i'm somewhat glad i didn't end up making my "young drivers" mistakes in a car i loved.

i second and third and forth what everyone says about getting a cheaper slower turtle speed car...
then again do what you will...
my first car was a purple/blue 98 chevrelet metro...(go ahead folks laugh it up..lol) it took more torque to tighthen the lug nuts than the engine made... all 1.3L of...lol
I got rid of it after about 3 years of driving it.. Lord knows i had fun in that car... broke in the back seat of that thing...hahahaaa
my second car that i got was no upgrade, unless you consider a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 to be an upgrade... lol By the way I still have that awesome 2door and I think I got about 3 tickets in that thing...all from long 1500 mile travels, and this was from being 20 yrs of age to 25 years of age. That car is paid in full, and its my hobby/guinea pig car...i learned a lot from that "dummy." lol
2007 rolls around, age 25 I buy my 2008 Speed3... all those years of driving and I own one car, and now I have two... well 3 if you want to get technical...the wife drives the 05 MZ3.. but still you get the point... I learned a lot from driving E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E...
in the end, you will get what you want, and I'm not going to persuade you either way. What ever you decide, fave fun and be safe... oh; and don't drink and drive...
to answer your question, I don't know personally how the Challenger would compare to a Speed3...hell I didn't even know they were out till 2 days ago..lmao
good luck man

Haha thanks for all the replies. It seems everyone is advising to get a slower car...but the SRT8 really wasn't an option in the beginning. And...dammit, I just want the speed3. I guess it's really not my "first" car..it's just..the first car that I owned. I live in Taiwan and the driving age is 18. I'm 18 now, but I've been driving since 15 cause my parents weren't around to drive me to school. And it's damn far away. I drove a Lexus RX330 for the three years...and if any of you been to Taiwan, the streets are incredibly...small. That plus about three dozen scooters zooming around you at any given time, it makes for quite difficult driving conditions.
But anyways...I'm sorry for all of you who suggested a slower car. And maybe one day I'll end up saying sorry to myself. But I want the speed3. And I've worked at some sh*t jobs..literally, i had to clean it...and saved, to be able to convince my parents to get me this car. I'm not changing my mind. :)

I saw a new Challenger run a 14.1 at Cecil Dragway in Maryland this past Wednesday. Slower than I expected, but I was much slower than expected with a 14.65 in my 08 MS3. I blame wheel hop...or a combination of things I'm doing wrong. But the Challenger was SICK!

To the OP: that last post made things a little bit clearer. If you've already been driving for 3 years in a SUV in Taiwan, IMHO you should be fine with a speed3. You're still young though and in no way an "experienced" driver. I'm only saying this because I'm 20 and am in no way and "experienced" driver.
Just be smart about it and make sure to take lots of pictures for us.
Best of luck man and stay safe. We don't wanna lose a mazda family member to anything, let alone stupid decisions.

Yeah seriously...but the great thing about Taiwan is...we barely get the police involved, in anything. A couple months ago, I was stopped at a red light when a scooter-ist tried to use my back bumper as a ramp. Turned out he was texting and didn't see that the SUV wasn't moving. Well, it was a good thing that I look older than my age...and he didn't bother to check for license cause he knew it was his fault. Ended up paying for my repairs, and another 5000 NT for any trouble (shady)
EDIT: To Mr. Vegas: Yeah I know how to drive a stick. My cousin over here has a Golf GTI, and he's taught me a few months ago :) Parallel park, yes. I'm not too worried about parking and stuff...learning how to park with a SUV in Taiwan, I'm sure, is a much harder task than parking in the States.

As a 19 year old male. I love this car.
I had a different perspective though.
When I drove my Mazda 3 I felt it was slow and too ordinary. Therefore I drove fast to make myself feel better ... lol
When I got the Speed I had no reason to do so. I knew my car was fast and it stood out. Not to mention the first week I had the car it scared the living SHIT out of me.
All my family members told me it was a bad idea to get this car at my age. My uncle won't shut up about it. It was important to me though so I went ahead and did it.
BUT ...
There is a big difference between being responsible and trying to convince yourself you are.

I'm trading my speed6 for a challenger next summer. Why? Well I've always liked muscle cars and I work my ass off everyday to buy whatever car I want. I was 20 when I bought my 1st speed6, got rear ended at a red light 2 weeks later then went and bought another one. I was young (still am) and wrote off a brand new car. I've never gotten a speeding ticket or any other fine.
I think its about how mature the driver is, some young people drive great and some not so great. Hell I see 40yr olds drive like morons all the time so it doesnt have much to do with age when it comes to speeding and what not.

Hey, I started off with an 03' Sentra Spec V too. That was an interesting first car. And then I totalled it.
But like everyone is saying, get a uses reliable car first. I was suppose to/wanted to go that route but my dad was looking for a new car so yeah. Save your money for a new car. You'll appreciate it more. Plus, learning stick shift in a slow and used car is better then learning in a quick new car. You'll beat the new car and everyone will think you're terrible for doing that. I know I do when people get new cars as their first and don't know how to drive stick.

Dont listen to him, the speed3 was my first car and it took me about 2-3 days to master learning manual and being in control of the car's power. The MS3 was a great car to learn driving on. I'm still only 17 and I have takin my car up crazy mountain roads and done some pretty cool stuff. Everyone says I'm a good driver soooooo yea buy it.

Well I can't really say anything. My first car was a 1989 Z28 IROC with about 450hp (Got stolen). Second car 86 Mustang GT convertable with about 350hp.
But I'll admit, I could have gotten into a lot of trouble. I use to top them both out daily. I consider myself lucky to have never been in an accident.

LOL... Who am I kidding.
i'm going to address this because it's a really common argument for getting a fast car as your first car. yes, it's obviously possible to do stupid shit in slow cars, but the chances of doing something especially stupid go waaay up as the car gets more powerful.
shit, i could get killed walkin down the street in freakin small-town kansas, but my CHANCES of getting killed are a WHOLE lot higher if i do the same thing at 3am in camden...=/
as for the OP, be safe, man...it's a fun car, but it's your responsibility to stay alive. don't leave your parents a lifetime of regret if something were to happen like bravik described.

I love how sunny "mastered" manual shifting in 2-3 days. Truly, he is a god among men.

No one will say "What did that prick do to deserve that car" if your a 19-20 year old driving around in a MS3. I paid for mine through Air Force benefits...its very possible.
But when you see a 19 year old driving a Porsche Caymen S (Like I did yesterday), THEN you will be saying "There is NO fuckin way he could afford that car without mommy and daddy"

Sorry to get off topic, but what do you do in the AF? I'm stationed at Nellis.
As for the 17 old kid, how the hell did you get a speed 3 at 17. I am 23 and barely got mine. The Miata is a great car to learn how to drive on. It teaches you great car control with having little power and no aids like the speed3. And to say you master the shifting and the car's power is complete bulls***. You must be a prodigy or something. I'll look for you in a couple years in the Formula 1 series.

My first car was a nissan 200sx se-r with the sr20de engine in it. That this was unbreakable! than I got the sentra spec-v se-r, I hated that thing, I put so much money into mods, (rims, intake, suspension, exhaust, short shifter exe exe) and it was all stillen stuff. But I went through 3 cats, 2 ecu's, and 2 engines!! Luckily it was all under warrenty but I got so used to seeing that check engine light, i don't remember what the dash looked like without it. I do like to see the turbo spec-v's from time to time, those things are really quick.

I saw the new Challenger this weekend at a Bar in Cleveland, still had temp tags. The kid (Dad) paid 54K (10K markup). Awesome orange car however.

I think the Challenger looks much better than the new Camaro. i would just have to wait till they come with a 6 speed.

Im crazy!!! but now im taimed. I've almost lifted off the ground thats how fast i've gone in the past. But all that has changed. My accident did it for me. I lost my car, and it was hard going to school... 3.5 hours on bus/train commute. I lost my job beacause of it couldn't get to it, and couldn't even get another one b/c they were hard to get to. My GF didn't live close so we went through a ruff patch and broke up. This all happened just going 25mph on reverse and hitting a parked van... no one was hurt, but the car was lost. I thought about what would of happened if i was going 100 mph, a speed i broke everyday. I guess thats what happenes when you get older. I dont recomend getting a beast for your first car. I waited for my 3rd car to do so and i still acted like a butt. You might think you're cool going all fast and sh*t, but everyone else thinks you're an as*hole.
