my wife was driving my 90 protege down the freeway and it began to cut out and surge, and then died.
had it towed home. thought it was a fuel filter. replaced fuel filter and fuel pump.
checked spark - no spark.
replaced cap and rotor. checked for voltage at the coil and got 12.5v.
tried new coil - still no spark
Help! What's next....?????

Also: we replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump.
Pump makes the on noise when trying to start car, but no sign of fuel hitting the injection system....

Can't guarantee it but I smell a fishy little timing belt broken here. Take off the oil cap and look inside from the side. A flashlight might make it easier. Have someone turn the key. If you at least get the initial crank, even if it doesn't turn on, you should see movement inside. If you don't, the belt is broken. If the battery has died, charge it or put another one on. You can also have someone turn the crankshaft manually while you look in the oil cap hole. You can also take off the distributor cap and there must be movement there too. With your car's age, most people have the car junked rather than go through the expense or work. If your car is in decent shape, otherwise, or there is sentimental attachment, repair it by buying a new belt.
