He can talk about higher fuel standards all he wants. When it comes down to it, a true petrolhead can't resist the allure of a lusty V8

Let your gas guzzler flag fly Arnie. You have an excuse. The terminator can't drive a freakin prius!

The Hollywood star-turned Californian governor has built a reputation as a leading green campaigner and last Friday told a climate-change meeting in Florida: "America is so addicted to oil it will take us years to wean ourselves from it, and to look for new ways to feed our addiction is not the answer."

In an interview last year, the governor spoke of his wish to create "a whole new industry of clean cars and clean engines and components to build those engines."

To this end, he did sell his fleet of Hummers - a civilian version of the four-wheel-drive military Humvee.

But the former actor's green credentials may have been slightly dented after he was spotted driving the coupe in Los Angeles.

The vehicle, which does just 13 miles to the gallon, boasts a 6.1 litre V8 engine and can reach 60mph in under five seconds.

Schwarzenegger, 60, took the car for a spin with his sons Patrick, 14, and Christopher, 10, and his wife Maria Shriver, 52.

The model, an SRT8, is similar to The Dodge Charger made famous by The Dukes of Hazzard television series in the 1970s and 80s.

The first production versions of the car, which costs around £20,000, were auctioned off before arriving at garage forecourts.

All I can say is, give him a break. If he was buying gas-guzzlers once a week, then preaching green-friendly on sunday's, then i'd be skeptical.

As far as i'm concerned, politicians are still people. Sometimes, they have a little more power than normal citizens. Otherwise, they're still human to enjoy the fruits of American design and ingenuity. Think of it as, re-investing in America!

I'd rather he drive a Challenger, than a Prius only for the politically-correct appearance.

Can't the man live like a typical guy. We guys like fast cars, he's no different. Not like American politics are perfect in the first place.....

This is the least of their worries.

I'm not condemning him at all. Please don't misunderstand me. I just think it's so funny that a lot of these "green" types drive the prius to environmental events and swap it for the Range Rover Sport or the V12 lambo to cruise around at other times.

We're supposed to cut back and "make sure our tires are properly inflated" while they get to jet set and live in 20,000 sq. ft. homes?

They better let me buy my G8 GXP and get 12 mpg when I can finally afford it! :)

We'll settle this land dispute with a quarter mile drag race!

I totally agree. What irks me is that all too often, the latter turns out to be the case.

I don't think we're being condemned from driving gas guzzler's at all. Could we be doing things alot more energy-efficiently? Absolutely. But it's definitely less profitable to design a very popular and fast vehicle that no-one can typically afford in a down market. Therefore, the auto manufacturers have no choice but to stop production on low seller, and in our case currently, hot-rods have came and gone it seems.

If you can afford the gas guzzler, go for it! That's the beauty of this country, we do what we want. These politicans are supposed to be the voice of the people, so sometimes they have to walk and talk like normal citizens. But they are paid neatly for their duties to society. So they usually get carried away. I don't think it's right either way. They don't have much responsibility other than looking after their own personal agenda it seems. And if they didn't get paid that much, maybe they would feel the affects of the decisions they make in congress, rather than typically being exempt from those decisions.

Oh yeah, well my governor is a canadian hooker so beat that.

Anyway, selling all his hummers is a good show that he somewhat cares, doesnt mean he cant own powerful cars, new cars are a lot cleaner than most of the old cars out there that cause most of the "problems".

Its not Arnold I'm worried about, Al Gore bothers be because hes a hypocrite. All this global warming crap and he drives SUV's and lives in a huge house that takes tons of electricity, he tried to "go green" and ended up using more energy than he did before.

Good post. I can most certainly see a time coming in the US where cars like the Challenger are banned because they are "bad for the environment". We're not there yet, and I hope we never get there.

Once again,

I was not criticizing Arnold. The man can drive whatever he wants. I was just poking some fun at him because he is always talking about the environment etc. but in the end, he too succumbed to V8 seduction. If the situation was so dire, he would not have come within 100ft of a Challenger.

BTW, Al Gore Makes me Sick!

I didnt mean to imply that you were criticizing Arnold, that was more of my transition into my dislike for Gore. Politicians are kind of comical in that they are some of the biggest hypocrites around, maybe they should practice what they preach.

I feel you.

I figure if they can ban "trans fats" because they are bad for us or they can ban "foi gras" because the geese "suffer", what would stop them from banning Big V8 Sports-cars. Like people can't make their own choices.

It wouldn't be an easy thing to do but never underestimate the ability of the govt. to get their way if the people are silent.

I like when they make decisions towards actual, real-life improvements for better living.

And I like when the media works in conjunction with them, to put corrupt corporations on blast.

Like, recently when they explained how "happy meals" and "kid's meals" were bombarded with insane amounts of calories. No wonder why kids are obese! And don't forget about normal meals. Just those $.89 Beef & Cheese Burritos at Taco Bell are damn near 500 calories! WTF! I could eat two of those, barely be full, and have 3/4's of my calorie intake for the day!

I'd just like if they'd stop financially bailing out complete failures..(ie. banks, business, welfare).
