View Full Version : Strange whirling sound

Perhaps I can get some help on this issue. I'm hearing a whirling sound from the engine bay on my 01 Pro ES. It started this morning. The sound changes with engine speed. It almost sounds like a supercharger. The car doesn't have to be moving either, i can push the throttle while under the hood and hear the sound as well. It is not as loud after the car warms up, but it's still there.

The only thing I can think of, is I was out in the country yesterday and was on a dirt road following someone for about a mile. I didn't notice the sound on the way home though. I've got a CAI, could I somehow sucked up too much dust/dirt?

Sorry if this is posted in the incorrect place, I guess this could have also gone in "3rd Gen Engine & Performance general"

you will always hear the sucking or whirling sound from your CAI, now if you think it's from the dust, i would take off your filter and just blow it out with an air compressor to see if that what the actual problem is, b/c usually the more junk you have stuck to the air filter the louder the sound is going to be...

I'm familiar with the sound the CAI makes, this seems to be coming more from the valve cover in the middle rather that down in the corner where my filter is. I can still hear that just fine. Maybe I'll try and clean the filter anyway since I'm sure it's probably dirty after the trip.

well if you were only on that road for a mile it's prob not that bad, and do you have a air filter breather for your engine or a vacuum hose coming from the intake pipe, check those too.

It's got the hose that comes from the intake. I do have some caked mud and junk under the car. I'll probably take it by a car wash today and get the junk out of there.

I added some videos so we can hear the sound, sounds like it's in the front of the engine by the exhaust manifold. In the video it's faint, but you can hear it.

Yup, and it just did. I thought maybe i'd get a day or two to at least move some money around, but I was at the car wash and the guy dropped dead. Got a quick jump but that's only going to last so long...I'm taking it somewhere in the morning.

Thanks for the help you two. (thumb)
