Photos of the all-new sixth generation VW Golf have leaked out just a few days prior to its official media release. Set to make its public debut in Paris this October, the hugely important Golf VI represents VW's best selling model as well as one of the best selling models in the world.

Despite positive reviews from the press for its driving performance and attractive interior, exterior design was to blame for the slow selling Golf V in Europe. Additionally, blaming high production expenses as a result of a lengthy per unit manufacturing time, VW brass set out to cut their losses and push development of a new MK VI Golf which is based on the current MK V platform – just nipped and tucked in all of the right places for a faster turnaround time.

For the exterior design, which was overseen by Volkswagen's head designer, Walter de Silva, top execs sought a design that was conservatively evolving off of the MK V yet somewhat sexier with a more aggressive stance as the vehicle gets a more purposeful looking front end plus a hovering slammed effect as the wheels fill the wheel arches nicely.
The Golf VI will have three and five door versions, a rumoured cabriolet and of course the GTI which may get a glass roof. A new 1.6-liter TFSI engine is also said to be on the plans generating about 200 bhp, however, the Golf VI is set to get a new entry level engine below the 1.4-liter TSI found in the current generation. According to Wolfgang Steiger, VW's manager for powertrain research, tells the new generation Golf will offer either a 1.0-liter or 1.2-liter engine producing 75 horsepower. A final decision on which displacement will be used is yet to be finalised. It will depend on whether VW management decides on three or four cylinders.
Diesel engines are also expected to equip the hatchback, both in BlueMotion and twin-drive plug-in hybrid versions which are scheduled for release from 2010. The GTI will get even more power than the current model with an engine delivering 230 hp, and an even hotter 4Motion performance edition along the lines of the current R32 producing 265 hp following later.

Don't see radical changes, except the more standard VW looking butt (i.e. same as the Touareg). Also, I do believe projector beams would make it look a little bit better, unless they are reserving them for higher trims, like the GTI and VWR32...

Interior, I've always like VW, very simple yet good designed...

Rims are fugly, but the rest of it is slightly de-uglified.

VW really went downhill after '04 with its styling.

The recently unveiled VW Golf / Rabbit MkVI will form the basis for the next GTI as well, but we already knew that. What is news is that the GTI car will get a version of the revised 2.0-liter TFSI engine, good for 211 horsepower andd 258lb-ft of torque, which represents improvements of 11hp and 51lb-ft. The latest iteration of the evergreen hot hatch is likely to arrive in European showrooms by the spring of next year, with a U.S. release expected near that time as well.

A concept version of the car could make a car show debut by October, however, says Autocar. To complement the added power offered up by the new engine, VW will improve the car’s steering feel and accuracy and handling performance.

On the outside, the car will get Audi-like LED daytime running lights, and new front and rear fascias along with unique head and taillights to differentiate it from lesser Golfs / Rabbits. The wheels will also grow an inch in diameter, with the base GTI rolling on 18-inchers and 19s offered as options.

Under the hood, the new global EA888 engine will sport changes that will make servicing faster and therefore less expensive for owners, thanks to easier access to the turbo and oil cooler. The power boost is largely owed to a variable valve lift system developed by Audi.

The all-wheel drive R32 model will be discontinued, and replaced by an AWD GTI-R with the same turbo motor from the Audi TT-S, making 265 horsepower.

WTF? You've got to be kidding me. Yes, a GTI really needs a set of 18 or 19" boat anchors at each corner. Fucking idiots...

GTi-R??? I'm sure Nissan would not like that.

I doubt there's much they can do. It's just tacking a letter onto a trademark they've had for 20 years.

I wonder if they are thinking that the reason the R32 isn't currently selling is that people aren't making the connection with the GTI or something. I think it's more to do with the fact that it's an overweight piece of crap.

Ya'll beat me to it...at least the interior looks nice, but that's not really news coming from VW.

Nissan can sue Volkswagen because Nissan used GTi-R on the Pulsar B13 in the early 90s. Would that be trademark infringement or what ever its called?

Yeah, but VW has been using GTI since the '80's. There might be a problem, I guess, but they'd just have to get rid of the dash or something. I don't really see it being an issue.

I think its all going to depend on which market they use this badge. I think they would not have a problem here in NA but in Europe they might not be able to use the GTi-R. I do not know if Nissan still holds the liscensing on it. Didn't Suzuki had a GTi-R on one of their models?

the Swift GT was originally the Swift GTi until VW made 'em change it. similarly, our Corolla FX16 was the Corolla GTI in Europe.

unless Nissan has a US trademark registration on GTI-R (and it's doubtful they do after all this time), they might be out of luck (unless they have a TM on "GT-R" and can show that it's confusingly similar).

We'll have to wait and see what happens. I miss my FX16....
