Holy crap..... Been quite a while since I have been on this site. Picked up an 03 Protege Base model at the beginning of this year. Got it for pretty cheap with a blown motor. Anyways.....
Long story short I got a motor from a friend in Mazda with 5k miles on it. Since I bought a house that is 42 miles away from work one way and fuel prices are crazy right now I thought it would be a good time to try out some fuel saving stuff.
I tore into the motor and did some very basic stuff. A couple of oiling modifications, lightened the pistons, semi-knife edged the crank, and re-balanced the rotating assembly.
Thats the only thing I have done so far other than optimizing the timing , bumped up the tire pressure, good alignment, and keep as much cluster I can out of the car.
So far to date best mpg driving @ 67mph is 39.
My goal is a lofty one, I would like to see an honest 47 to 50mpg.
I realize I may have to change the displacement of the motor to get there, anybody know of any de-stroker crank? Whats the best a/f controller out there for n/a application? How tall of a tire can I fit in the fenderwell? Anybody know of a taller 5th gear ratio kit? How about aerodynamic kits like a front air dam?
Anybody have other ideas? I do not want to compromise safety by cutting too much weight out of the car.

Funny......
I did just order 195/65/15's. Should change my effective gear ratio pretty dramatically. Hopefully they fit.
