I drove down to an autocross this weekend through some heavy rain. Luckily the rain didn't hit us at the event until it was already over with. Any ways, when I popped my trunk to pull the spare out I noticed water in the recessed area by the trunk vent and in the tub where the spare sits. Any ideas? I searched and someone mentioned a recall but I can't find any other information. Any help is appreciated.

There are little rubber gromets on the floor in those areas. Pull them out. If you do that, atleast the water can drain itself out. But as far as water getting in there, there is a seam, like cork, that has probable rotted out. I remember there was a thread on this, and I believe theman had the info about the seam.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Hmmm, wonder why it happened ... oh, maybe because I was love tapped from behind this past winter. I'll pull the tail lights out and check out the sealer. Thanks again.

This is a chronic problem. My 99 ES and my first MSP did it. Dealer fixed it free.

I'd rather spend the $8 on a tube of sealant than deal with the BS local dealer. I would take it to the body shop that fixed my rear bumper, but again it's a hassle to take it in, get a rental, etc.

Its a simple fix, plus it don't have to look all pretty because it gets covered by the lights.

Can I just pull the taillights, or do I have to pull the rear bumper off?

No bumper removal. Pull taillights out. Also peel back the carpet in the trunk so you can also look around.
