View Full Version : Transmission knocking

Alright, well in the last week I have started to get a noise from the tranny. I believe it is associated with the clutch/flywheel area. Its a knocking which at idle is very noticable. However, when i press the clutch pedal in the noise goes away. I can hear it when slowing down too due to less engine and wind noise. If i sit in neutral and press the gas some with the clutch engaged the sound does speed up, however if I repeat this while the clutch pedal is in, the noise is no longer there. So, I believe this rules out the engine seeing how the motor sounds good if the clutch is in and I rev it up some.
Shifting is not any more difficult then before(kinda stiff due to B&M shifter). Can feel almost like a grinding feeling in the pedal when letting the clutch pedal out. Clutch has around 98,300 miles I know its pretty worn, but hasn't been slipping except after a couple hard launches at the track earlier this year. Have not been to the track in months so the driving I have done has been rather easy. Started up after making a trip toward the seacoast with three friends.
Basically looking for a possible answer to what is causing it. I have read it could be loose flywheel bolts, bad main bearing in the tranny, bad input shaft bearing, bad throwout bearing, or gear lash.

Sounds like maybe the throwout bearing but I would plan to change the clutch out at the same time and while your at it resurface the flywheel (very cheap and if it's warped slightly it will cause more problems).

yeah i mean if its a clutch issue, thats no problem. I had planned a replacement clutch at the beginning of next month. I just want to see if anyone thought it was something more serious in the tranny.

Could just be a worn clutch that's starting to chatter. When my old clutch was going out it never chattered or slipped but had sort of a humming rubbing sound when down shifting

So with the car in gear there's no vibration or anything? I don't think it's anything internal in the tranny. It really sounds like the throwout bearing which I don't think would actually fail completely.

well the sound is still there if i am driving down the road, and it speeds up as my motor does, but if im driving and push in the clutch and coast a bit it goes away just like it does at idle.

Not sure if the flywheel comes with a new pilot bearing too? Eliminate that as a possibility too. Don't forget new axle seals.

should i need new seals? im not leaking anything right now..or will i need to change them after pulling the axles out?
and the clutch kit includes the pilot bearing...

I always do (at least the pass side) since sometimes it gets torn up getting the tranny out.
