stock air intake questions

I just bought a 2000 Protege ES with the 1.8L engine, 5 speed manual. The intake assembly over the radiator is loose and doesn't make a secure connection with the intake assembly that houses the air filter. Also, even if it were secure, there seems to be an open hole on the bottom side of the intake tube. Could someone tell me: Does this seem right, or should there be basically a single tube/path running from the air filter out to the intake that peeks out just under the hood on top of the radiator?

I can take some photos if that helps.
