I am looking into buying a locally owned 2003 Pro5. It's an auto 4cyl with 146k miles. Is there anything in particular anyone can tell me that I should be aware of when I got to look at the car? Does anyone have an '03 with 100k+ miles that can let me know what they have had to have done with it since? Please and thank you all!

P.S.

Tylor call me sometime! We'll talk Pro5

Me? I would ask if the timing belt/waterpump has been replaced. Ensure the VTCS/VICS screws recall has been performed (if applicable to the car) You can search by the VIN.

Ask for reciepts for oil changes and other maintenance performed. if the original battery - expect to replace it soon-ish.

When was the last time the brakes were inspected/calipers lubed?

Any mods?

It is a reliable car (as long as the maint has been done).

Report back to us and we can assess it..

The waterpump was replaced september of '07.

Carfax says that there were no factory recalls.

Regular oil changes every 8 months.

No performance modifications.

Brakes were inspected and lubed July of '06

Still the original battery.

What do you guys think? He's asking $4100

8 mons is a bit far apart unless he was using synth oil.

And its a red flag to hear that JUST the water pump was replaced. It would have been near criminal to put it back together without replacing the timing belt, idler, alt belt, etc.

But even if he didn't replace the timing belt, I'd buy a straight P5 in a second for $4100.

Whoa! What? Where you come from kid? What's happening with the Tiburon?

First thing I am gonna tell you is you'll turbo this thing. You will not be happy with the power! Straight truth bud!

But for that price, that almost sounds too good to be true. There are a few guys in your area, evilmonkeymsp is fairly close to you. Shoot him a PM and maybe he can help check it out for ya.

yeah the price is right. You didn't mention rust? That gets more than a few P5s.

dont get auto, the manual version is already slow enough

if its auto, and u turbo it, thats gonna be a pain trying to drive it
idk but i think that would be a big strain on the transmission, which isnt too strong to begin with

and how many boosted auto's have you owned??? :)

boosted auto for over 50k miles, no issues! the turbo, at 6psi, makes up for all the loss through the tranny/drivetrain...it's a blast and i don;t have to push in the damn clutch! (alright);)

We have to be careful with our 5 speeds as well. Not really much different there

Alex, if you can get pics, go for it. Engine bay, all 4 sides, as much as you can get

oh i know. I had a turbo auto. Drove it until the auto started shifting slower.. Then i swapped that ATX for an MTX and i broke 3rd gear (smash)

hahahahaha its quite possible the auto is actually stronger than the manual. (<joke)

Auto might be stronger stock for stock, but, 5speed can be beefed up more than the auto and able to take more power
