Well, it was long over due... 49,834 miles on the original filters. When I pulled them out, dirt/dust was literally falling out with them (boom06)
These are the filters I got. One order comes with both filters...
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k431/BSeriesILLEST1/DSC00287.jpg
I got them off EBay. Only cost me $22.30 shipped to my door. Not that much cheaper than the vendor(s) on here but if you can save a few buck, why not :D
If anyone is interested I got them from this guy http://stores.ebay.com/Quality-Plus-Auto-Parts
It also came with instructions:
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k431/BSeriesILLEST1/CabinFilter.jpg
As you can tell, on our 5's we can skip steps 2 and 3.
Step 1's picture is most likely for the Mazda 3's because my 5 doesn't have that clip on the lower-left kicker panel cover. My 5 (and i'm sure your 5's too) just pull right off. Pull the left side till you feel the clips snap off and move it slightly to the left to unhook it from where it's attached on the right side.
The top two screws in step 4 are a little annoying to get off but not too hard if you're used to working in confined spaces like me :) and i'm fat so it should be easier for you skinny people lol
The trickiest part is installing the new filters. The top filter you have to hold up so you can slide the bottom filter under it. Sounds easy but when there's little to no space, you find yourself screaming at the damn filters lol... Unless that's just me (fuoops)
Here's what I noticed after the filter(s) change:
-A/C blows a little cooler
-Air is noticably fresher
-Blower motor isn't as loud. I'm sure it was working double time trying to get air through the nasty clogged filters.

Thanks to which ever mod or admin moved this thread :D
I don't know how much your local dealer would charge you for the filter itself. Some dealers charge more than others.
Look at a vendor on this site: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=214264&chapter=§ionids=0,51825&groupid=51827&subgroupid=2475&make=22&model=5&year=2007&catalogid=2&displayCatalogid=0
I wouldn't pay more than $30 for the filters and I wouldn't pay the dealer to change it for you either. They charge an arm and a leg to change cabin filters.

You can say that again. My 5 is at the dealer to check out an issue with the pass. side rear door lock. They want $89.95 to replace the cabin filters (!). (and $310 to replace rear brake pads . . . and $39.95 to replace the engine air filter . . .) Yep, a total of $440 for something that is going to cost me $110 in parts and an hour of my time. That's just not gonna happen so long as my opposable thumbs are operational.

Anybody do this for an 08 or later yet? Looking at the trademotion site there seems to be different filters depending upon whether you have rear ventilation or not.
w/o rear ventilation cost is USD$23.39
w/ rear ventilation cost is USD $34.12
The site does not show part #'s so I can't tell for sure. Any input for 08 and later?
I'm going to have to do this soon. I have 77k on my car and I think it might be past due...(shrug)
www.onlinemazdaparts.com has it for $23.78

I have an 08 and I ended up buying the cabin filter at the dealer because I couldn't find an aftermarket source that listed a filter w/ rear ventilation. I counldn't get a straight answer out of Mazda as to what was the difference. I can tell you the dealer filter that I bought was blue and that all the aftermarket companies I found either listed no difference between the 08 and after or said w/o rear ventilation. If you found one that distinguished the two, I'd say go for it.
OEM filters for $25.27 here: http://www.mazdaparts.org/mazda5-cabin-air-filter.html
free shipping on orders over $100 - I had picked up some stuff from them a few months back (oil filters, cargo net, engine air filter) and received the stuff quickly and without problems.
I ordered the set of filters on Monday from www.mazdapartsonline.com and they arrived about an hour and a half ago.
I changed them out, and let me say it was not a small task for a 6'0" 220lb guy with wide shoulders. I had to lay on my back with my head shoved in the floorboard for part of it just so I could get a good look at what I was doing.
I've got about 77,100 miles on the car, and these were the original cabin filters. I'm sure glad I did this today, because I start a 3,000 mile roadtrip tomorrow to Virginia Beach and back to DFW.

Yeah, it's a pain all right. I know I did a lot of cussing at those stupid filters. If you could just get both hands up in there...

I changed mine this weekend. It was difficult. That is a tight space for a guy my size. I nearly separated my right shoulder trying to get those four screws off.
There was a mess of junk in there. It looks like a mouse tried to build a mansion in there. Unfortunately, the blower fan is *still* loud.

So how do you change out the cabin air filters on the 2008 Mazda5? Where do they go? I've been told by different people to look on the left side of the console, the right side of the console and behind the glove box. All seems a bit hit and miss. Can anyone actually be authoritative?

Thanks for the thread. I successfully changed my cabin air filter. One small problem afterward: The blower does not work anymore!!!!!! I checked fuses and none were blown. I checked the wires on the plate that was removed to make sure they hadn't come loose. Any ideas?
One more piece of info: while I was changing the filter, I didn't finish in one sitting, so I drove for a day with the panel open and no filter.
Any help appreciated. I'm hoping that after saving tons of cash on changing the filter myself I won't have to spend hundreds to get the blower working.

So, is it possible then, when you drove the car without finishing, the electrical connectors were hot plugged at the cabin filter?
If so, I know exactly what happened because it happened to me. If the connectors are plugged in with the ignition on, it will blow the fuse inside the power mos fet (the assy with black plastic on one side and big heat sink fins on the other side that is screwed to the filter access door). And the blower motor will no longer work. The power mos fet is not designed to be serviced, however when I blew mine, I did manange to take mine apart and solder in a new fuse, so it can be done. If I recall correctly the replacement part was around $80 from mazdaonlineparts.

Thanks to mazdadude for the info. Sounds like I replicated your "experiment." Hopefully I can replicate you solution as well. Did the part come with step-by step instructions? I'd like to make sure I don't cause any more damage "saving money."

Power mos fet? You mean MOSFET? What does a field effect transistor have to do with the fuse? Sounds like you blew a fuse. MOSFETs don't "blow" unless you reverse the current about 100 times what the normally see. Even Mazda isn't stupid enough install a part that could see such a dramatic spike to ruin it when it costs $.10 to buy a million different versions that won't fry. I just don't understand what you guys are talking about. It makes no sense. Are you just saying you blew a fuse?

Well my fix involved taking the unit apart, unsoldering the old blown fuse, and installing a replacement fuse, so it was free. I tried looking for the part number for the entire replacement piece from Mazda, but had no luck so far. The parts catalog calls it a different name than the service manual. OK found the part it is here : Collision Catalog - 2006 - Mazda - MAZDA5
Air conditioner and heater, Evaporator and heater components, Resistor, #25 in the diagram $112 MSRP http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=214264&chapter=&Sectionids=0,51825&groupid=51827&subgroupid=2383&componentid=0&make=22&model=MAZDA5&year=2006&graphicID=5460082&callout=25&catalogid=2&displayCatalogid=0
My unit tested out bad, so since I had nothing to lose, I went ahead and disassembled the component, saw that there was a fuse inside, tested the fuse, and determined that it was indeed the fuse that had blown. I have electronic and soldering skills so it was not a problem for me to unsolder and replace.
FROM MAZDA5 2006 Factory Service Manual:
To test your POWER METAL OXIDE SEMICONDUCTOR FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTOR (POWER MOS FET) you will need an ohm meter.
Connector { | x | C | B | A | }
TESTER LEAD+ , TESTER LEAD- , RESISTANCE kilohm,
A , B , INFINITE,
A , C , 6.9,
B , A , CONTINUITY DETECTED,

make sure that your keys are out of the ignition when changing the cabin filter.

(yes)
EXACTLY<<<< Thats why almost every item in the service manual is preceeded with disconnecting the Battery Ground.
If you didn't feel like hacking into your old one, this might be a good item to get from a mazda recycler.
Its been about 34k miles, time to do this again... (notcool)
I found a better link for the cabin air filter:

$9.94 for the set. That's the best price I've been able to find.

I just replaced the cabin air filter in my 2007 TG, 37,500 miles. Attached is the picture of the old cabin filter. New filter set costs $10.07 delivered off from ebay. It was really tricky to remove one top screw. You may need to be prepared to squeeze yourself.
