I have heard that if you turbo charge the proteges with automatic transmissions they just rip themselves apart. I was planning on doing so what do you guys think? I wouldn't be driving it hard turbo spooling or revving it in neutral then dropping it or anything but i would hold my foot to the floor form a dead stop all the way up, that's just how i drive and why I'm loving this car;). What do you guys think would it start slipping and wreck itself? I would also appreciate it if you could tell me a company or something i can call who would know about this stuff? This car is my daily commuter and as much as i love winding it out on open roads i sit in traffic and don't plan on getting a manual anytime soon, besides my skills driving stick aren't exactly desirable to passengers.

you can turbo a auto any day. You just cant go high in boost on a stock trans. Lentech builds auto trans for the protege that can handle the boost as well as ofter parts like valve bodie, torque conveter. ect ect

I have heard that people with Supras actually prefer the build on automatics because they won't miss-shift and blow up $100k worth of work AND no loss of boost through shifting (of course they aren't stock transmissions). At least that's why the dude I saw dyno his at 550whp told me...

I will say if you are on a budget and this is your dd and only car, think twice before putting money into a turbo build. That's why I bought a new MS3 instead of turbo charging my old Integra.... reliability!! Also, if you do it right (and you should) you will be in it for a few thousand dollars. I don't know if the MSP came in an auto, but that might be a better bet.

When you get into HIGH hp autos are generally a hell of a lot faster then stick when built obviously

No MSPs came auto..I say if you got your car paid off and have nothing better to do but turbo your car then go for it. But if you do then you have to do it right the first time with the right parts to avoid any problems in the future.

I know people with the triptronic autos who drive their cars like manuals and turbo them with good results.

I've heard of the good results from the triptronic shifters but i don't have one and i need to be pretty much sure it won't wreck it as i need to get to school

I turboed my old p5 with an msp kit and it was an auto. No matter how much you say you won't be hard on it, there is always some time you want to push it. If you do that too much it will start slipping. Mine was my daily driver and I ruinned it and had to get a new car. I traded it in and lost a lot of money in the long run. I'm still paying for my mistake. I do not recommend it. That is why I have a msp now.

I'm pretty sure you can't just go pedal to the floor as it's shifting gears. This is where the tranny gets destroyed...you will need to let up!?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I just wouldnt risk it...the tranny just isnt strong enough...

No one drives a boosted car and doesn't push it.... that's why people slap on turbos and stuff, they wanna go faster!! :D Keeping your foot down while it goes through the gears is pushing it too. I'm not saying don't turbo it, I'm just saying make sure you do it right and don't convince yourself the car isn't going to be put through it's paces

you can look into sending the tranny out and having it rebuilt stronger before you add boost.. look into places like level10.com or is it levelten.com, cant remember outta new jersey do some great work. ohh here it is http://www.levelten.com/index.html. remember also that heat is the autos worst enemy....

Same can be said about the manual transmissions too. 3rd gear anyone?

Put an additional fluid cooler on. Put the turbo kit together using good parts. Don't push the boost too much- if the engine isn't also built up, it can also be a weak link.

3rd gen autos are the same- just a different ECU on the triptronic to be able to shift.

Boost it.

yeah, but 3rd gear typically goes on cars running a bit more than stock boost. With an auto, Stock boost is most likely going to be enough to damage it...yes a trans cooler will help but who knows how long it might take (dunno)

Im not trying to be a negative nancy, I just wouldnt do it if the car was my DD ya know...
