I can't figure out how, but the shiny ring (aluminum?) around the top of my shift knob has several scratches and dings on it. I don't wear a watch or any sort of jewelry, I don't know what the hell is doing it. Anybody else have a scratched up knob? The plastic part on top showing the shift pattern looks fine.

Mine's like that too. I don't yet know how, but I think my keys caused mine, even though my keys are always in the middle cup holder when I'm shifting.

Do you wear a jacket with a button around the end of the sleeve where your wrist is? My old MSP had that problem and I couldn't figure it out until I looked at my snowboarding jacket and realized it was rubbing up against it all the time!

The jacket I wear in colder weather has no buttons or zippers on the ends of the sleeves. And besides, it's got a new scratch or two in the last month or so.
I guess the clearcoat just scratches easily.
I've only had my car a month and noticed last week that I have a huge scratch on mine. My story is pretty much the same as everybody elses...no rings, watches, etc on that hand. It looks to me like the ring is made out of aluminum, which can be REALLY soft. I'm guessing that a fingernail may be have been the culprit, but I don't want to test my theory and put another scratch into it...in the event that I might be right. I guess this is going to turn out like a fight with the old lady...I don't know what caused it, I don't know what I can do to keep it from happening again, but I'll just try to be as careful as possible moving forward. :)

I have a few scratches on mine as well. I think it may be due to what i sometimes do when getting out of the car. Turn the car off, push down clutch, pull out keys, put in first or reverse with keys in hand. The keys must have scratched it because i don't have any rings or a watch and nothing but my hand ever goes near the shifter.

The knob on my slow3 peeled and ended up peeling of in the exact shape of the African continent...
mine originally started because i would tap the beat on the shifter and i wore rings...

I'm the one who posted the other thread on the shifter scratches. I have nothing around the shifter, like rings, etc. I find that in addition to the scratches, there are actually more like little dents/divets that form. I can see it start out small and then get bigger.
Like I said previously, it's like I have acid seeping out of my pores! Very strange. It was the same way with the aluminum shifter my previous car, 07 Civic Si.
Oh well!
