so how does an increase or decrease in tire/wheel size, from stock, effect the odometer reading?(confused)

Found this with a quick google search.. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Different tire size will affect your speedo reading, this page will tell you by how much. Also, if the speedo is not accurate, your odometer will be off slighty as well. Buy how much, I'm not exactly sure of the math but without thinking to hard I would think it would be the same percentage that the speedo would be off. Not positive on that though.

Just think of it this way, a smaller wheel will have to turn more times to travel the same distance as a wheel with a larger diameter. So with a smaller wheel your odometer will show more mileage than you have actually traveled.

And this is another good arguement for why car's odometers shouldn't measure miles but should measure hours. How many miles the car has driven is a bad indication of the wear and condition of the engine. Consider a car that was only driven in the city vs. one that was only driven on the highway. The average speed of the car driven in the city would have half as much as the highway car. This also means that assuming both cars were driven for the same amount of time, the highway car would have double the mileage of the city car even though each engine was run for the same amount of time.

It willnt change much.

I went to a taller slightly wider tire and hard rubber,

no real change in MPG or in my speedo reading.

Good argument/point. The newer GM vehicles (07 & up) display operational hours and no odometer. I have a feeling all automakers will move to this format.

here's another issue/question... my buddys ford pick up's speedo say's he's going faster than he actuall is.( 3-4 mph)..what is the effect on the odometer, if any?

Then his odometer will read higher than actual.
