I guess this falls into the transmission part of the forums, but not sure on that. Either way, I am looking to install a short throw shifter on my 03 dx, and my question is, is it terribly difficult? and also, anyone know of a pictured based instruction set somewhere i can look at?

i just did this. def one of the easier mods. hardest part is getting the c-ring out thing. go to advance search and put in short shifter your answer should come up.

you do have to get under your car too, just count on a lift for the install
it took me about an hour or two for me and my buddy and we were goofing around too...

I have to get under the car eh? well i could just head to the auto hobby shop. I've seen a few installs on hondas and subs, but the shifters ive seen for the protege do not have that pivot cup. I know I have to remove part of the center console, but do I need to do under the car?

you need to get under the car... you have to disconnect the stock shifter from the shifter rod... it's way to easy... like TWISFM said the hardest part is getting out the c-clip thingy which really isn't hard at all if you have the right tool to get it out.... i've never did a short shifter install in my life and when i did mine it took nothing but 20minutes. I installed shifter, knob, and shifter bushings

having snap-ring pliers will make your life a lot easier!!

I remember seeing a how-to for someone installing the TWM.. if I can find it, I'll post the link here.

edit: found it on the TWM website (though you can use the directions for any brand really):

consider the shifter bushings also.. you can slip them on while under the car, but if you decide to do it later, no biggy.. you don't have to do it all on the same day since it's opposite ends of the linkage.

installed. Thanks for the help and the link guys.

also quick question, there is a slight rattle once in a while with my stick shift, is that to do with the shifter or something else? Bushings and everything the instructions told me to use.

if you used stiffer bushings the shifter may vibrate more due to the stiffer bushings.....at least mine does.

my shifter also has a slight rattle to it.. i normally keep my hand on it tho so it's not really noticeable.. then once i'm in fifth it goes away. so i think the rattle is more in higher rpms. i also have the shifter bushings installed and awr front motor mount (have the rear motor mount but never felt like fighting with the install, plus the front mount added enough vibration thank you very much.. haha).
