Pay the $100 or so and hire a lawyer. Most guarantee no points and according to your record and the judge you may have to pay court fees or take an online course at worst. In the end though, you'll have no points, you won't have to go to court and your insurance will stay the same. It's a game and you have to learn to play along.

We all speed... if we don't, why do we have these cars and spend time on this forum?? I'll admit I speed :D
Now, give him a break and try giving ADVICE for what he can or should do to ease the effects of his ticket or get ready to go to court

what kind of advice was he expecting when he goes 20 over the speed limit? build a time machine and slash the cops tires? so u can fight it in court, maybe u'll luck out and the cop wont show or possibility the judge will make u just pay the fine w/o points. i wouldn't use that excuse though especially if it was on a 2 lane freeway. anyway, everyone speeds but take responsibility and man up if you get caught.

No sympathy here. It does suck to get caught but that's just how it goes. Tap your brakes if someone is to close or move over to get out of their way. You never know if the driver behind you suffers from mental issues, so choose your next move wisely.
I've been pulled over a few times for speeding but not always ticketed. Ask for a warning and don't act like an ass. Every now and then you'll get lucky and drive away clean.

Tap your brakes? So you can teach him a lesson? C'mon man either ignore the person or get out of the way...your taping on the brakes will only make the guy behind you mad and do something stupid.
Seriously how many times has "tapping" on your breaks had a positive effect?(fuoops)
as for the OP...
sorry about the ticket. cops are lame and tend to enforce the laws as they see fit (to the letter of the law one time and then not enforce the law at all the next) as opposed to fairly and consistently.
If you do go to court... be very polite and respectful to the judge and officer, but you cannot admit to going over the speed limit. Say that the driver behind you was threatening and driving erratically. Explain to the judge that you were speeding up to get out of the guys way because you felt in danger.
Good luck!

Hell yeah....Dude..if you tailgate me hard enough..I will literally park you on the freeway...Hell with "tapping".
At that point..the driver has done something to make me mad..so I am gonna return the favor.
And yes..I will get out in a heartbeat as well if need be.

First off I don't give a crap what the person riding behind me thinks and have no interest in teaching lessons. If someone were to attempt to run into me or using your logic , teach me a lesson they would lose. Several strategically placed bullets will end that teaching career real quick.
Choosing your options wisely works both ways. You never know who your messing with and just how far that person will take it or end it.

We only have two lanes on most of our highways which were built long ago and cannot handle the volume of traffic that is being placed on them today.
We utilize both lanes for driving..although it is common courtesy for the left lane to be the faster of the two and if you are moving slower..you should go to the right and let the Guy pass.
HOWEVER...You as the faster guy, must also understand that sometimes you cannot immediatly move over due to traffic, so you should not ride my arse to try to get me to go faster or move sooner.
It will only make me take my good 'ol time for your impatience.
Now..If you come up on me and I have no where to go....and you follow at a closer than normal pace while still leaving me room to breath..I will gladly look for the next available safe opening to allow you to pass....But if you ride my butt....Forget it..I will keep you there for a very..very long time

Thank you! I don't understand why people like to drive three abreast on the highway. Apparently, they know the "Slower Traffic Stay Right" regulation so they figure if they all go the same speed then no one needs to move to the right.
As for the ticket, most courts will just let you pay double the fine and it'll get changed to a "defective equipment" ticket (non-moving violation). It'll all about making money for them.

Last time I got a ticket and metioned it on the boards everyone scolded me like they were my parents . (hah) haha and suck it up buttercup you'll get no sympathy here . Almost like everyone on the board is the cop that pulled you over.
Theres not much you can do but hope the cop doesn't show and get a lawyer your best bet is to strive for a reduction , go to driving school before you even go before the judge . Try to show him you give a damn about what you did . Getting a lawyer just shows him that you feel the outcome is important to you . Plus the lawyer might even know the cop or state attorney and that might socially help your case .
Whatever you do don't just do nothing because the judge will take that as an "I just don't care "
good luck

I should have been more specific. I'm speaking about 2 lane highways with little volume. I'm talking blue hairs, teeny boppers on cell phones and people driving like they are comatose. If traffic is heavy, I'm not speeding anyway. It's not a matter of miles per hour. It's a matter of decisions per minute. Lots of cars....and I hang back.
My commute is what I am talking about mostly. It's a 2 lane highway out in the country for 40 minutes. Two cars trolling along @ 60mph boils my blood.

OK..I will agree with that one..Especially the Cell phones.....I wish they were banned in cars.
People have a hard enough time driving without throwing another huge distraction in the mix.
At the Air Force Base Here in town..you CANNOT talk on your cell phone while driving on base UNLESS you use a hands free device..I think that should be implemented country wide.

Ask the judge if he will take 6mph off the ticket in exchange for your guilty plea, and describing your tailgater. In GA, 14mph or under will not effect your license. If he does not agree, take it to trial. Then, try to delay/reschedule each of your next court dates until the case is dropped. Otherwise, hire a lawyer.

Even on the 8 lane I-66, I don't see why grandmas have to hog the left lane going the speed limit. I know it is the law in Virginia to yield to a faster moving vehicle on the left lane regardless of whether the person in the back is speeding or not. I think that law only applies to the roads with center dividers though (like the interstate). Please correct me if I'm wrong about that Virginian regulation. People blocking the left lane on a 4 lane highway (2 lane in each direction) should not be allowed to drive; nevertheless, I wonder if they can actually be prosecuted for their stupidity. -_-a

Overly agressive drivers are rampant here in Florida. I can't tell you the number of asshats who will see the 2 or 3 car lengths between me and the person in front of me doing 70 mph in the fast lane, 5 mph over the limit, and zip around me to the right to cram their huge SUV into that tiny spot, because you know, they just HAVE to be in front of me.
At 70mph on a highway, 2 or 3 car lengths is nowhere near enough of a safety buffer at those speeds....

Idiots who cant Merge...What is with these people
Timid drivers is one reason. They merge too slow or too close to the merger in front of them, thus not allowing enough room so they slow down.
The biggest problem I've found with merging is too many people crowding the merge lane (bumper to bumper).
People who do speeds excessively UNDER the speed limit...yes...There is minumum speeds you must maintain....35 in a 65 onthe highway is not acceptable....who are these people anyway?
There are minimum speed limits on contolled access roads. You have to allow for that, at a minimum (no pun intended).

It's best not to mess with people or create a more dangerous situation. That
said, I prefer to downshift (rpm match), engine brake to get the driver's attention, and then zoom-zoom away and then move into another lane and slow down again to my preferred speed, and look at them when they do a fly-by.

We are lucky enough to have posted signs on the freeway that say "Slower Traffic Move Right".
Unfortunately people are cell phoning, applying make-up, reading books, reaching under their seats, etc. so they're too busy to see the signs to get over.
You know that you're behind a great driver when you see their rearview mirror is turned so they can see themselves.
But tailgating only works if your in a bigger vehicle or some POS that people will worry about. Old beat-up trucks or station wagons work good. You know the ones...one headlight, no side mirrors, 2 or 3 different paint colors and trailed by large clouds of smoke.
