View Full Version : First speeding ticket in the MS3

So I have been driving it since March 2007, and I have always been a fairly fast driver. Not aggressive per se, but certainly --- shall we say --- offensive. I don't use a radar detector (I hate them... I have got a speeding ticket every time I have ever used one.) because they don't work very well, and they lull you into a false sense of security. I say keep your eyes peeled, look for likely "spots", check your mirrors, and remember almost any unmarked car could be a cop --- so always give it a solid look before you blow by.
Anyway, two state troopers (marked) were working in a pair and I got nailed. I saw one, caught him in time --- but he called ahead to his buddy (I assume) and I got it 1/4 mile down the road when I sped back up.
Oh well, I haven't had a ticket in 6 years, so I am going to go to court, plead guilty with an explanation and everyone tells me I will get a PBJ. (No points!)
Here is to paying better attention next time...

Sorry to hear that man. I'm due for one any day now because my luck will run out sooner or later, I'm sure. I don't drive like a maniac, but on an open stretch of road I will get into it from time to time.
I agree with you on the radar detector thing. When I had one years ago I got 2 tickets because I depended on it too much. I prefer to just use common sense these days.

You are right my friend! in my 17 odd years of driving, I have used three different radar detectors and I got nailed in a matter of days or weeks with each one. Without using a radar detector, I average one about every 5 years. Cops that pulse you (with a laser or otherwise) are going to nail you everytime. These guys aren't stupid.
Well, again, let's hope for the PBJ, otherwise it is 2 points for me!

Every detector I've ever owned has paid for itself many times. If I'd had the Bel 995 in the 300C, I'd have avoided the last ticket I got.

Pretty much everyone on the freeway goes 85+ but it's mostly local country road driving for me so radar detector+++!!! My car stands out from most of the redneck trucks around here!
I don't speed much but I tend to get to the limit with the tires smoking more often than not!

I'm using a 8500 X50 and it has saved my ass many times.... but there are also times I've been cops out WITH GUNS IN HAND and not a peep..... laser ;)
but yeah.... drive smart. know where they hang out and keep your eyes open for mobile officers. thats the best way to do it

With radar detectors you get what you pay for. But I do agree that they can lead to a false sense of security so I also keep my eyes peeled and am very careful about where I speed. The detector is certainly a nice compliment though, and have more than paid for itself. It's also helps that 99% of the cops around here user radar :).
My first ticket in this car was what prompted me to get the detector in the first place. Two cops behind some bushes with a radar gun. I was so friggin pissed I didn't get one earlier. Definitely the best $200 I've spent.

That does suck but its not as bad as what happened to me.
I think I had the car for a total of like 30 minutes and I got pulled over for speeding (even tho I was going with the traffic) and switching lanes without using the turn signal.
On top of that I didn't have a license with me because I left it at the dealership for collateral for a title on my old car. At least the cop was nice enough and understood that I left the license there, so no ticket for that but the $75 speeding one was sucky.

$75 speeding ticket? Minimum here is double that.
I borrowed my buddy's Passport to run up to Dallas and back one weekend and we were tearing ass both ways in my Trans Am. I slowed down any time there was a rise in the road (this is how most radar users get caught... cops like to wait on the other side of the hill to nail you as you crest it) and that by itself would've been enough to avoid a ticket.

Totally agree. I have never used one in 17 years of driving and have only received one speeding ticket. I crested a hill pissed off from a horrible day and got nailed, when I was like 19 or 20. If you keep your eyes peeled and think like a cop (ie. know where to look for hiding spots), you can easily avoid getting caught. Also familiarity helps tremendously. If you drive the same roads everyday, eventually you will know all the typical hiding spots. Drive on unknown roads, either be careful, or do not speed.
If I'm elected president, I'd have much stricter license tests, much longer learning periods.........and raise all major highway speed limits to 75!
Don't be surprised if speed limits are actually lowered due to increases in cost of gas! Going over 55 mph is so fuel inefficient, I think there will be a move to lower it in these high speed areas (ie. Texas, Michigan, etc.).

I hear you, but I still disagree. I don't care what kind of detector you have, when that cop that you didn't see pops his radar / laser on you, it takes a several seconds for the detector to go off, you to notice, and then get your speed down. By then, it is usually too late. I say why do you need the radar detector. That's what you have eyes for. If you didn't see him to begin with, the radar detector isn't likely to save you. Again, that is how cops do it around here.... they leave it off until the last second... then boom! You are done...

In addition, a detector won't save you from an unmarked cop tailing you and getting your speed that way (especially at night).
Detectors have their purpose, but for me they're just not worth the false sense of security they give you. I figure if I had one, I'd drive faster than I do already and then I'd get caught in some stupid way.

Out here and even in Houston that would only be like 1% of the time.
Mostly they just sit on the side of the freeway in the woods hiding or while driving hitting everyone that passes by.

There is a theory that "safety" implements cause greater risk taking, whether it be helmets or whatnot, and this actually leads people to greater harm from the greater risk taking. Interesting ....
I'm taking the "common sense" route. No false sense of security/risk-taking inducements for me!

J/k... actually they don't use a gunship, obviously. =p
They use a small airplane and time you with a stopwatch the time it takes for you pass the two lines marking the beginning and the end of a 1/4 mile.
With that information, the officer in the sky can get a pretty accurate reading of your vehicle's velocity. *^_^*

Nothing says "I'm date material" like walking backwards toward someone's voice with my fingers interlocked on my head.

First of all, you have to own a top radar detector like the Valentine One before you condemn them all as useless.

Sorry, the kind of detector you have is irrelevant when they pulse you. A radar / laser detector can't detect one that isn't on!

That is why you are supposed to have a rabbit that is a good distance in front of you so that they get pulsed and you detect it and have time to slow down. The kind of detector you have is relevant because crappy detectors have crappy range and they won't alert to quick trigger pulls of the radar gun.
camrycev6
07-07-2008, 04:08 PM
If I had a rabbit, I wouldn't need a detector. And you just can't always count on a rabbit on so many of the roads. (2 lanes, back roads, etc.) Don't get me wrong, I understand your point out a good range detector, but to me, it adds very little benefit because of all of the other things you must do to make it effective. As everyone has already pointed out, you need to be constantly checking in front and behind, side streets, on / off ramps, and of course --- a good rabbit helps a lot. When you do all that, I find you pretty much don't need one.

Yeah well 99.9% of the cops here don't pulse you or use laser. Thats why I mentioned it. And your eyes can't see around corners. I've picked up radar around corners before and had more than enough time to brake. We also don't have hills here ;) Like I said, it's not the be all end all, but it's a good compliment. The false sense of security claim is usually for young and inexperienced drivers. Me in my early 20s would definitely rely solely on the radar and would also invest in the cheapest unit as well. With age and experience my sense of awareness has changed drastically. In addition to the radar, I use sight and I memorize all the areas known to have traps.
Another instance where having a detector is useful is for areas one might not
be familiar with like in little tourist-trap one horse towns where speeding tickets are a good source of revenue.

I can tell you they pulse in Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland for sure. Those are the places I used radar detectors that were dead silent and then suddenly lit up like Christmas trees. (And I did use three different detectors, and one was a highly rated Belkin. Still didn't help.)

He asks me what I'm doing. I say "just running". He asks me for ID, WTF? I didn't have any pockets. He asks me if i live in the area. I reply that i've lived here for almost two years, but i've been in Iraq for the last fifteen months. His demeanor immediately changed to an apologetic one. Maybe i should just move to a town where there are more than 20-something black people. Nah...

Ha, I got a similar one my then girlfriend (now wife) and I went for a late night walk in the town we live in. This was when we were still in college. We were both in pajama bottoms and t-shirts. So we're walking down the street on a friday night. Countless ricers and cars were flying down the main drag. And a cop pulls us over.....for walking. And they call for back-up. So they ask us for ID and all we're carrying are our dorm keys. They say they stopped us because some local college kids had been "breaking into the mall" or something. So after asking us a few questions as everyone drives by to see 2 people pulled over by 2 cop cars, they ask for our dorm addresses and let us go.
I was just a little upset. Like they had nothing better to do.

I'm on the other side of the radar detector argument. Mine has saved me so many times it's paid for itself ten-fold. I don't let it give me a false sense of comfort. I still have to look for the "trouble" spots, especially where I know laser is used.
Anyway, PBJ? A sandwich will get you no points?? ;)

I respectfully disagree. I just don't see much value added with them.
As far as the PBJ, you still get points. It is still considered a conviction, it is just that you get probation before judgement. It helps with the punishment, but remember in most states you still have to go through a MVA (DMV) hearing that has nothing to do with the criminal one. This usually means a 8 point slap (In MD anyway) and a license suspension / revocation.
