View Full Version : Protecting the fuel in our tanks

Hey everyone, question.

I'm starting to become concerned about having the fuel in my tank stolen. I don't live in a high risk area, but one can never be too careful.

This last weekend, I've seen two separate instances, different vehicles, different locations, where someone obviously broke into the access door covering the filler neck, with the gas cap dangling...sure signs that thieves siphoned the gas.

Will a generic locking gas cap work on the CX-7? Or will that trigger a CEL if used? Or is something made specifically for the CX-7 needed? With gas prices creeping up, I want to protect myself.

Thoughts?

Thanks, Vince.

Excellent question that I don't have the answer to. I wonder if Mazda will be offering a lookable cap in the future or maybe now?

You are right; now they are drilling holes in the tank to steal it...

You mean they are punching a hole in the bottom and draing into another container? If so then a security system that goes off if the vehicle is rocked.

Vince,

Stant shows a listing for a locking cap for the CX-7 in their catalogue.
Saw it listed at some on line retailers for $10.50 each with two keys.(cheers)

If they are prying open your access door the damage is already done :(

I'm sure they aren't gentle either...

Wait, if you drill into the gas tank, don't you run the risk of blowing up?

It would suck if you were in E and somebody tore your car up for nothing.

True enough....if someone is truly determined to steal my gas, then there's not much I can do about it...but I can certainly try to make it as difficult as possible....make the thieves work a little harder to get to the goodies. And possibly, if it's too hard, then that might be just enough deterrent, eh?

As for damage to the car....that's what auto insurance takes care of.

there is actually a spot on the tank of all new mazdas that says puncture here to drain tank and is designed to be punctured easier than the rest of the tank. I have no worries on my truck it has a 1/4 inch plate of steel surrounding it.

Locking gas caps wont do squat except kep the honest people honest. You can siphon gas out of the new cars but you will have to use a extremly small hose. The rate you would get gas out of that hose would negat any time and effort put in to steal the gas.

If someone wants your gas bad enough they can and will get it. I have a nighvision cam with sound pointing into my driveway that records everything. Everyone knows I have it becuase im not hidding it either.

Nice security system! It's a good option for those who live in single-family home or town home. For those of us who live in condos and apartments, that's not an option.

Yes it is a option in a condo(saying you can see your car at least). I'm not sure about apartments. If you can mount a dish to get tv im sure you can mount a cam
