Seems like a decent middle ground between boring regular lancer and evo...

I can see someone in a snowy climate choosing that over a speed 3 or gti......

I was seriously considering one of these before the MS3. I think I would be disappointed with the performance.

It really depends on what your looking for. Buying a car is a lot more than just the performance numbers. Yes, they can have a lot of sway on the final decision, but ergonomics, appearance and convenience features all play roles.

I still don't know if I'd take one over an MS3 (given the mazdas price advantage) but it sure is tempting.

I think once you got a set of decent tires on the ralliart it would improve things a good bit like they mentioned in the vid. Still sucks that you would need to buy new tires though..Personally I would just save about 7k more and buy an EVO. Then again I wouldn't buy an EVO- BMW 135i FTW as my next car :)

Between this and the WRX, I'd take this. The looks have really grown on me.

base price on the ralliart is going to be in the 25k range just like the wrx, and not much more than our speed 3. Yes, you can option it to the sky.

does the evo (and now this ralliart) look like darth vader in the front to anyone else?

Id consider one if they make it with a regular manual transmission.

the only real significant body difference between this and the eco are the fender flares. Lowered with some 18x9 rims the ugly talk will just fail. Considering the market for the new evo already and this car sharing the same power plant and AGP already has a turbo kit for the 4b11 making 400+whp on a bone stock unopened motor.... i can guarantee you that the ralliart will be handing ms3's their asses pretty soon. That is an unbiased opinion coming from a current owner but a devoted mitsubishi fanatic.

It will still cost $4000 more than my Speed 3 and is slower. I guess if you have to also add a bigger turbo kit (more money)then why not just get the EVO. I will also bet that insurance will be very high for the RA. It looks bad ass but will get beat by a GTI or maybe even a chipped turbo beetle, in it's stock format. I agree that you will certainly be able to mod more power than the Speed 3 but for $21,000 the Speed 3 can not be beat. I'm older than most club members and prefer the sleeper look of the Speed 3 over the boy racer look of the RA. The RA's aggressive styling will almost certainly draw unwanted attention from the cops.

but the under pinnings are evo 9 hardware on a stiffer body then the exo 9 was. the only downsid is the engines power output but within a year there will e kits out galore to make it more powerfull. one of the problem i see is the tranny there duel clutch in the full evo isnt going to hold up to much more power then what its alredy pushing out.

0-60 in 5.5 secs (brake-torque at 3500rpms and then go)

Quarter mile 14.3 secs at 97mph

Now that changes the equation significantly

And why is priced higher than a msp3? Recaro seats (the best optional according to edmunds), AWD (from the EVO IX) , and that dual clutch tranny from the EVO X aint for free. No way!

Despite the 'almighty' twin clutch transmission, doesn't the lack of a real clutch neuter a turbo awd car at launch? A 5 or 6 speed would be a must for me. I don't want an automatic transmission shoved down my throat no matter how good they say it is. Very curious choice Mitsubishi has made for this, and the Evo.

a duel clutch is an electronicly shifted manual transmision with two seprete clutches. not an automatic in the traditional automatic with its clutch packs and a converter. mitsubishin will have a manual 5 speed probably later in the production run.

evo gets either a manual or this highly praised dual cluth automated trans.
Hopefully mitsu will offer the 5 or 5 speed for those like u. Problem solved if they listen.

the raliarts insurance shouldnt be that bad. when i was looking for a new car a year ago. i priced insurance on an STi and it was going to be cheaper then my speed 3 is. the awd is considered a sefety feature.

Too bad every dealer I have been too has it for 38,995 and won't budge on the price, because people are still buying at that price.

Wow! I believe you I was just going off what's on their website. OTD you're looking over 40k! The new EVO supposedly starts at around 33k but I bet it's more like 40k as well. That's not too much less than a BWM 335i

These AWD 4 banger turbo cars are getting crazy in price. I wanted the Evo 9 RS model which was 29k msrp, which I thought was still too much.

The solution is a fun to drive RWD car (not the 350z, which is too heavy). A rear wheel drive 4 banger turbo under 3000 lbs would be ideal, assuming it was below $25,000.

if they switched the speed 3 from a fwd to a rwd then there we go! (freak)

Hyundai Genesis Coupe ought to be interesting, and relatively inexpensive.

This car will NOT be handing the MS3 anything, even after tuning. The turbo on the Ralliart is NOT the same as the Evo 9. It is a smaller turbo, so forget your fantasies of getting anywhere close to tuned Evo 9 numbers without replacing the turbo. Next, the transmission...it is not as aggressive as the Evo X's twin-clucth...it is missing the most sporty setting. Also, who knows how much power can be put though this? It might not be as beefy as the Evo Xs twin clutch on purpose. Next, the tires, which need upgrading to get better grip. While an easy change, just tack on more expense. Next, weight...the thing weighs over 3500 lbs. Can't really do much about that. Finally, you have that soft suspension, which is far from Evo...chalk up another upgrade.

Let's take a look at how this wonderful Ralliart stacks up to the highly berated new WRX, and our beloved MS3, all numbers taken from Edmunds Inside Line performance tests:

0-60
Ralliart: 6.6
WRX: 5.9
MS3: 6.1

1/4 mile:
Ralliart: 14.8 @ 94.6
WRX: 14.5 @ 94.4
MS3: 14.5 @ 98.7

Slalom:
Ralliart: 65.0 mph
WRX: 67.7 mph
MS3: 69.3 mph

Skidpad:
Ralliart: 0.81g
WRX: 0.81g
MS3: 0.86g

The Ralliart couldn't best the WRX or MS3 in a single category, whereas the MS3 tops both of them in almost every category, and does top the WRX in some 0-60 tests I've read. This car is not a few small changes away from an Evo, nor even an MS3. I'd be more excited about the upcoming Genesis and 370Z than this.

Well they are offering a beefy 5sp tranny for this. My biggest concern is that they got rid of the 4G63. That motor was Mitsubishi. That is the main reason your not going to see high hp numbers out of it. It's a semi-closed aluminum block.

Edit: Thought we were talking about the EVO

Donas64

Pretty much , it offers the security of AWD and some fun with good tires if the price is right.

dan1101
07-11-2008, 11:32 AM
Those performance numbers aren't too far off. But if it's $4,000 more than a MS3, then no contest.
