....ok, are you confused yet? So here's the story- I just had my windshield replaced, and today as I was cleaning the inside, I turned the mirror around to see " made in U.S.A"(can't remember what manufacturer) So I'm guessing the glass guy broke the original and then just replaced it with a jobber part.
I bitched to the body shop manager, who then tries to tell me "cars are made with components from many different sources". I then told him I have a bit more knowledge about my car than he gave me credit for, and that a car built in Japan is not going to have a mirror that's built in the u.s. Can I just get someone to confirm this before I start yelling at him again? Thanks.

Smells like BS to me. At work now so can't answer specifically but recently replaced my plain rear view with the factory compass/temp auto dimming one. Think it said Donnelly on it or something like that. I do have the original one at home I can check & if it is something you'd be interested in to go back original then PM me. I can hook you up with it for a small fee. Think they go for somethin crazy like 94.00 at onlinemazdaparts.com. Lemme know, I'll shoot ya coupla pics. It's a 2003 garaged car with eyebrow tint so no UV damage.

thanks, but I'm going to (try to)get an oem one from them one way or another. If for some reason I can't get it I'll let ya know. BTW, how is the compass/temp one for ya? Tough install? $$$?

Nah, just bending stooping to get the wire with the temp sensor thru the firewall was the worst of it & it wasn't too bad. It's a mazda part so all the wires are terminated where they just fall into place where they need to connect. Headliner easy to pull down just enough to get wire routed. All good, can't tell it didn't come that way to begin with. Lovin the auto dimming thing cuz I drive into work before light to avoid most of the traffic. PM if you don't squeeze the oem one outta the dealer. Damn, I didn't check to see what my plain one says on it. I'll try again after work. The compass one runs about 200 just for the part, I got it for 130 from fs section & I did the install so 0 for that.

OK, EYE-OPENER!!! Just talked to Mazda parts guy- get this- the oem mirror IS made in the U.S. Made by Donnelly(sp?) So maybe they weren't bs'ing me. Either way I don't think they installed it right, I now see a small notch at the bottom of the mount, it also seems to vibrate a bit more when I pump up the bass notes. Grrr.. wouldn't it be nice if all re-installs were as good as factory installs? ...oh to dream.... anyway I'll keep my eyes and ears open for one of those deluxe ones.

Yessir, my regular oem says donnelly model 240 on the back of it. The notch in the bottom of the mount is clearance to get to the release clip to remove it from the mount attached to the glass. Both of mine vibrate to the bass but not on any normal road bumps. Wouldna thunk it. Guess this is part of the 4.4% of the car that wasn't Japanese. Think there was some stat on something when purchasing that said it was 95.6% japanese parts. Always wondered what wasn't japanese. Figured it'd be airbags or seatbelts or some safety DOT stuff.
