has anybody replaced this pointless piece of crap with a proper plastic oilcap from a regular 3?
There is no point in making these out of aluminum... doing so only adds weight and ensures that you won't be able to comfortably remove the oil cap after driving unless you have a glove on.

how much those 3 grams of weight reduction actually give you HP wise?
but i have to agree, the most dumb mod if you like to open the oil cap after a 2 hr drive.
but again, who does this on a regular basis?

everytime i change my oil i do it right after a good drive when the oil is hot... taking off that aluminum cap is annoying. Plastic caps are better :)
And no, I'm not REALLY upset by this, I just wanted to bitch because it was silly of them to put it on stock when it adds absolutely no performance benefit whatsoever and only adds weight and reduces usability.
It is Surly Thursday... you HAVE to rant about something on Surly Thursday.
how much those 3 grams of weight reduction actually give you HP wise?Just splitting hairs but it's more like 3 ounces... roughly 80 grams  no, i don't actually want to change it because of the weight difference. I want to change it because it makes no sense to have it and it's annoying when i change my oil.

Am I the only one who had a brand new plastic cap in the glove box when I picked up the car from the dealer? It is of course still in the bag in the glove box, the aluminum cap just looks so much nicer.

Not only was my plastic oil cap in the glove box, but they thoughtfully bubble-wrapped and boxed the original gas door so I could take that optional satin eyesore off immediately :)
...just doesn't look right on Metro Gray.

i have an 08 and got the plastic cap bubble wrapped in the hatch area. As a matter of fact I never noticed the red cap when I bought the car (at night) and the next morning I was going to work and put my stuff in the back and saw it sitting there. it had rolled out of the bubble wrap. I thought they had left it off and freaked out for a second. lol
It doesnt bother me when I take it off to cool after a long drive as I drive with gloves on the twisties anyways (have had extremely sweaty hands for my entire life). So it doesn't really bother me one way or the other.

There is more too it than that. I have before and after dynos showing a 30hp gain. It only works if you have the metal one first however. In all seriousness this thread makes my face hurt. Dude you want the plastic one? Gimme you address, Ill send the damn thing to you. Send me yours in exchange.

Ditto what peanut said. I had looked under the hood at the dealership when I picked it up but hadn't really thought about the bright red 'bling' as being anything other than "eye candy" until I got the car home and my friend opened up the hatch and suddenly we both got very concerned. My assumption is that they don't put the blingy one on until just before you pick it up so it doesnt get scratched/dirty, and then give you the 'stock' one that the car shipped from the factory with.
I have an '08

I did not get a plastic one in my glove box either.
I know that at my dealer it got so bad that the Speed3 on the showroom floor was displayed without a cap because they had 2 or 3 of them stolen right off the floor.
