I personally don't think it's worth the risk installing a lip on a daily-driven lowered MS3. That lip is just barely off the ground.

Ugh, I hate my car without eyelids. It looks so wide-eyed. I'm testing out a set for a new sponsor.. so those should be coming within the next week or so.

I like the way lids make the headlights look but I don't like how they add bulk to the top of the headlight and actually bulge more than the hood does. If someone could make an extremely low profile version they would be great.

I don't like how the wing extension goes further up. If anything, i'd imagine they'd wanna extend the length of the wing horizontally, not vertically.

that is the 35 offset in the rear.

the front fenders can handle a little bit more so i put the 28 offset up there. right now the front is like the tiniest bit less poked/flush than the rear due to negative camber. like -2.3 to be exact. but once i correct the camber, ill post up some pics. but it SHOULD be just as flush as the rear.

Ironically, it's the fronts that don't change that much when lowered. Are you running a rear camber kit? If not, you're definitely pushing an aggressive angle.

no im not running a rear camber kit. i was going to buy one if needed but when i went to go get my alignment, they said that even though i lowered it, they didnt even touch the rear because it was still within spec. but i should be going in for another alignment soon so we'll see. but it really does look like i have a lot of neg camber.

yea tru but id delete the wing, so alot of that imge would b gone,, their just so reliable, they can handle anything... a freind of mine had an 05 he beat the shit out of it almost everyday for a year and the only thing that went was the clutch cause he would launch it at ever stop sign/ red light for like a month straight..it dont get much more reliable than that

lol thanks guys. yeah it's lowered on eibach sportlines. i love the perfect drop on it, the tires sitting next to the fenders. the wheels were powder coated gloss black and had a friend from a cadillac dealership wax the whole car even the wheels! the front bumper isn't painted but is vinyl wrapped. the guy i went to did a perfect job on it. adds a mean look plus protects that part of the bumper now. since that picture i've added a front lip, painted my roof gloss black, add on spoiler on the spoiler, and working on customizing a rear lip for it. i'm in no rush to throw a rod in this car so i've been working on appearance mods and such

when all is done with those current mods and on a nice day i'll post another picture of its current state

also i honestly believe me removing those orange reflectors inside the headlights is what really set off the rest of my theme of black and white. maybe some of ya didn't notice it's gone =)

Nice, i bet gloss black really helps with brake dust, i just put my stock rims back on for winter and remember what a pain they are to keep clean.

How hard was it to remove the orange reflectors in the headlights? that does look really sharp.

Hank3
11-04-2009, 09:43 AM
Not hard to remove the orange reflectors once you have the headlights baked open. IIRC, it leaves a couple of holes and indentations because of where they snap in. From afar, it definitely looks sweet.

Hahaha, the car hasn't been washed in about 3 weeks... hence no tire shine. I don't really like using it either, it tends to sling onto the side of the car, no matter what brand you use.

not true at all.

If you use a silicone based tire shine, yes, it will sling all over the side of your car, no matter how long it's been sitting on your tires.

Get a water based tire shine and it doesn't. I use Meguiar's Hyper Dressing diluted 3:1 and it looks good, wet but not too wet and it doesn't sling.

They are a new release from ECSpeedSound, a vendor on M3F. They actually are not on my car right now though. :)

Yeah, fitment isn't great and the adhesive (these are a vinyl material with adhesive backing [not removable]) isn't that sticky. I could not get them to stay adhered to the headlamp.

Send him a PM, he may have worked out the bugs by now.

well what i do is spray them on, but not right away. only when i know the car will sit for hours. then when i get back to the car i got a rag and softly wipe some of it off so it doesn't splatter all over the car. doing this really lesson the amount on the car greatly. but i'm a guy who likes to works on cars and clean so it doesn't bother me to clean it once and a while seeing it. i carry micro fiber rags at all times and the black stuff wipes right off with the rags

Yeah, I had them on my old sedan (in the regular 2003.5 finish) and decided it would be a great winter wheel for my Speed3. I didn't want to go to an 18" since winter tires would have been ridiculously expensive. :) The only other pictures I have can be found here: http://www.larawdesigns.com/Mazdaspeed3/

Yep. Moonshine has a bunch of pics that were good when I took the Speed3 and Mr2 up there. I've been to the Dragon like 4 weekends the past 6 weeks. LOL. Absolutely beautiful up there this time of year. I toured the Hellbender28 and Highway28: Quad-state tour (TN, NC, GA, SC). You should scope out that road next time you are there. Take hwy 28 from Deals gap to Franklin TN to Highlands TN/NC and then drive hwy 28 for about 30 miles until you reach SC.

Let me know when you are going to drop by again. I'm always itching to run the dragon and it's only a 2.5hr drive for me to get there. :) Oh yeah...and I've got in-car vid of a clean run up the dragon's tail posted up on youtube. :D

Looks good attacking those turns on the Dragon doesn't it? ;D I've got H&R coilovers and the cobb rear-sway bar as the suspension tweaks. Runs reasonably well up there, I just need to bone up and buy new tires...as the old almost bald Kumho SPTs are in dire need of replacing. Dragged the front bumper in some of the uphill hairpin turns on exit. LOL

If i was to do my suspension all over again...I'd buy the tein basics, revalve them and run a different spring rate and free length. That's what we've got on my old (now little bro's) mazda3 and he was just whipping the car bends at the Dragon. I could barely keep up on the downhill runs.

Where did you wash it at?? That's like a garaged car wash!

Just a local manual car wash. In the summer the rear doors are open, but they close them in the winter...probably to reduce traffic behind the building (less shoveling for them) and to reduce ice/wind/etc.

i'll probably end up going with coilovers, don't think springs will give me the drop i want. i just don't want to sacrifice ride comfort too much since it's a DD. the BCs on my MSP were super stiff even on the softest setting. looking for something a bit more comfortable that i can also tighten down for the twisty roads. how are your H&Rs?

not yellow - How much of a drop do you want? If you go H&R coilovers, they usually run about $1100-1300 brand new. They will drop you the lowest, there's no camber adjustment and you reuse the stock tophats. From what I've read/heard, they are rated at 40% stiffer than stock. If you want BC's again, they have everything you saw on your MSP but won't drop as low as them or the H&R's. They usually run $900-1000 and the spring rates are around 300-320 front/200-220 rear.

looking for something that at least has the potential to drop me 2.0-2.5 inches. factory specs for the H&Rs say up to 2.5" front and 2.0" rear. don't know the range on the BCs. but the H&Rs have no camber plate... and no damper stiffness adjustment???

i was actually complimenting laraw but your post came in right before mine. i'm sure your ride is looking sick too! hehe...

Man, thats a lot of money for just a drop. lame.

so the next question is why are the H&Rs more expensive and have fewer features? is it simply better build quality? (i know my BCs were not the best quality the world has seen.) and will i be able to live with the factory dampers if i can't adjust them?

In a word:

Yes.

Better build quality coupled with actual platform-specific damper tuning/engineering goes a long way.

The BCs, from what I've seen/read/heard, excel in neither area.

hehe... yes, trying to decide between H&Rs and BCs. i don't trust the BC as much but the price point and adjustability are hard to beat. if the H&Rs even just had adjustable dampers i'd be all over them.

Adjustability doesn't mean crap if the dampers are poorly matched to the springs.

The Bilstein dampers in the H&R kit were developed specifically for the rates H&R chose for the springs.

The BC dampers, from what I gather, are more or less the same cookie-cutter internals that they shove into all of their "BR series" damper bodies. I've seen no evidence to suggest that they were developed specifically for the 3/MS3 platform, and although I've never analyzed a damper dyno plot for an MS3-specific BC setup, the BC plots that I have seen have never impressed me in terms of damper curves and adjustability (for instance, the compression valving barely changes at all from full hard to full soft, and the ratio of compression:rebound damping in the plots I've seen are inappropriate at all but the softest settings).

I should also say that I've never seen damper dyno plots for the MS3-specific H&R setup either, but I've also NEVER seen a Bilstein damper plot that even approached being as questionable as the BC plots I've seen.

Take it for what it's worth.

Have you seen the BC's snapped in half just from some normal freeway driving? Might be those freak accidents, but ive seen it happen to many times to trust them on my car.

usually when something extreme happens like that it's because some one was beating on the car or it's just a freak accident like you said. however, i had BCs on my MSP and the build quality was questionable. two of the brake line brackets didn't fit correctly and one of the endlink tabs sheared of completely within 5k miles. in the end you get what you pay for. i'll probably plunk down the extra cash for the H&Rs just to try something different.

I'd definitely save for the H&Rs. I had BCs on my previous Mazda3 sedan and they were just junk in comparison.

Does anyone know whose car this is? It's from the nextmod site and I was curious on the fender flares they added on to it as to where they got them from. I was thinking about a subtle flare on mine and wanted to ask this person.

also searching for this car, also from nextmod because I have been desperately looking for rear flare add ons for years and wanted to see if they have more pics of these:

no rear flares? You got mud flaps tho, thats something that can also go where the flares are. But flaps would be pointless in the city tho. I'll never understand why people have flaps, especially the subarus if they are rolling in the city where there isn't any mud and it hardly ever rains.

I honestly Dont like the look of them on cars..so used to seeing them on trucks and suvs...BUT..if its practical where you live-alot of debri..then hey go for it..and ive gotten rocks hitting my windshield from city streets to highway roads and if that person would have had flaps on thier rig..then it wouldnt have happen..so whom am I to argue with logic..if it works and people wanna put em on thier cars more the power to them.

In regards to the flaps, I bought a set of the Rally Armor urethane ones with blue logo and installed them, I had them on my car for about a week before I ripped them off and threw them in a box in my buddies garage. I did not like the look. Different strokes for different folks, but I think they make the MS3 look like a truck.

I still do, however it don't have all of the hardware required. I would be willing to sell them if you can figure out how to get the hardware to install them. I hated the way they looked and i took them off and tossed em in a box, and I don't know where all the bolts and stuff are.
