lol I'm so lost now whether I want 35% or 20%. I'm definately getting one or the other consistant all around. Up until I saw your pictures I was sure I wanted 20% all around, but that 35% looks perfect even in a sunny day.. Did you have any doubts?

I've always had 35% on my cars. Friends always want me to do 20%, but I just thought it would be just too much contrast. I like 35% on light colored cars because it was a more 'balanced' look. Not too dark, not too light. Now if I was driving a metro grey or mica black car I would do 20% w/o any doubt.

Great combo. I am also looking at H&R coils with RX8 wheels. I've thought about a used set and repainting the wheels a slightly darker silver, but new ones are just over 800. Tough choice.

H&R coils are hard to come by, at least for the speed3 spec spring rates. I had these on my '07 CB speed3. I think they were the 3rd set released in the US. I ordered them from Turner Motorsports, H&R's US distributor. I know for a while that they were on a long backorder, with some waiting about 3-4 months. When the '07 speed3 was totaled (rear-ended by a SUV), I pulled them and stuck them on my '09. Although they aren't dampening adjustable, the ride is pretty good up front but the rear spring rates are rather stiff. I've had Teins before and they were the opposite; stiff up front and the backs were soft.

Rx8 wheels I had back when I was rolling in the Mz3, so they are about 5 years old. I got them for $350 back in '04. I repainted them a darker silver to freshen them up a bit. ;)

Heh. Those pics were my 10% show/90% go shots. They were taken when I was seeing how low the H&R's could drop. Couldn't do the fronts all the way to max, otherwise I wouldn't be able to pull out of my driveway. ;) I believe the measured drop in the max drop pics were -2.25" front/ -1.875" rear. My daily driver settings are about 1/4" higher all around.

That's such a great shot. The sunlight really highlights the body lines of the car.

Makes me wish I left my side moldings on.

That's probably why the rears feel stiff; there's very little travel between the shock and bump stop. My understanding is that H&R has one of the softest progressive spring set-ups (coilover app) besides the Tein basics. But I'm told the lowest "functional" drop is about -1.75" F and -1.25" R. I don't have them obviously, so I'm going by hear-say.

I'm telling you, the moldings are KEY! Our cars look naked without em..

Everyone keeps buggin me to take my moldings off. I think i'm going to leave em on to spite them.

I've tried explaining that it adds something on an otherwise blank canvas of flat metal. It looks clean on some cars, and cheap on some other cars.

Yes on the painted part and no they are not powder coated. I used a flat black spray paint from auto zone that just came out really nice. I really looks like they where powder coated.

Not all of us have daily beaters. The car gets washed at least once a week and in my pictures the only portion of the car that got dirt were the wheels -- BFD.

And again, yes... I do enjoy my car, dirty or not. I didn't buy it to let it sit in a garage. Seems quite pointless to me.

Question for Lara - how do you take off the stock protective lip to put on the HD lip? I'm assuming that's what you have? I've looked at it before and it's held on by rivets. And did you paint the rear reflectors and side markers?

LaraS
04-14-2009, 12:18 PM
Hey Hank... I actually just put the HD lip on in front of the stock protective lip... there is no way to remove that without cutting off the rivets. :)

As for the reflectors, I got overlays from SouthernSurfer (M3F member) and I painted my side markers with Nightshades. :)

It doesn't bother me. :) I'll be making my own lip this summer that will be a harder 'replica' in looks to the HD lip. I just want it to protrude a BIT more than the HD lip does.

Can't wait to see. I've been trying to resist the urge to order the DG carbon lip for a while now. I know my resistance is futile so I should just go ahead and order the damn thing already.

Well, I saw the DG lip in person the other day.

Eh.

I like it a lot, but I'd never buy it... it sticks out way too far and would be at risk of getting broken.

I've been driving around with the DG lip for a while now and i've never had any problems with scraping or damaging it.. even speed bumps are fine.
I'm on H&R springs too..

What made it a nightmare?

The drop made it nearly impossible to get anywhere (well, I eventually raised the car up... but bleh).

SOMETHING was always breaking on them as well. The bracket that holds the end link kept hitting the inner portion of my rim (common problem on the BC Racing Coilovers) and I'd have to keep bending it back. The end links kept breaking too... probably because the bracket kept bending back and hitting the wheel. It was just a nightmare. LOL.

When I do go the coilover route again I'll be getting Mazdaspeed coilovers.

+1

I've never had a car lowered, but with ground effects and whatnot. Having to take EVERY entrance at an angle, gets a little old after a while not being able to lift the car just using normal equipment. Now you have woodshop class making those platforms to lift the car high enough to finally lift it.

Then again, the car would probably turn in that much better with lowering springs.

Damn, really? Sorry to hear that. I got mine used and they work just fine. All I had to do was bend the bracket that holds the ABS line a little to the back of the wheel won't hit it.

how did u do that and is that a mazdaspped or a regular 3

Nliiitend1
05-19-2009, 10:39 PM
It's the Euro version of the MS3 (the Mazda 3 MPS) and it has different bumper and lighting requirements for the Euro market, therefore it's a little different. The rear bumpers are shorter, the front bumpers have headlight washers, and there is a rear-facing red foglight. The spoilers are also different. The MPS just has the spoiler from the regular 3 hatch (with the option of an "Aero kit" or something like that that replaces the spoiler with the US spec spoiler and replaces the mirrors with BMW M3-style mirrors, IIRC)...

There's nothing "odd" about his taillights, for a Euro-spec car...They are required to have a rear-facing red foglight, which is what is on the left side in place of where our left reverse light sits...

Sick ass avatar- good job- sick pictures as well.

People I got tired of the gold rims.... I'll be re-doing them and most likely go white this time. White on white sick.. I'm in the process of designing some 1" stripe through one or all of the alloys or something I dunno yet.

I'll post pictures when I'm done.

If not, I'll either have them done black or graphite.

As much as we like Lara's car, I say she owes it to everyone to take her car down the DIRTIEST road she can find, horses and all, i'm talkin mud sprayed up each side, windows covered, mudflaps caked with mud, THEN take some pictures.

All these scenary pictures in the dirt with no action is no fun.

Go blast down the dirtiest road you can find!! lol

http://www.larawdesigns.com/061909/8c.jpg

That's a fantastic shot! Now, here's where my imagination kicks in:

Imagine that someone was sitting there, continuous shooting mode and you come BLAZING by with dirt sprayed up the side and the trees blurring in the background. It would be the hottest thing I could imagine and couldn't have duplicated myself. It'd be so WRC/video-gameish haulin through a dirt trail type stuff.

Silver Ecstasy

Just a thought! Spray the road down with water (if it's even remotely muddy or dirty there) just enough to create some splash areas and i'd just have the trigger mashed down taking shot after shot and it'd seriously be an amazing picture.

I'd even consider doing that on dry pavement! Like the Infiniti G37s convertible commercial where they hit the one spot of water and slow-mo it as the water sprays up.

Whatever the shot is, do it in a heavy panorama and darken it up, almost to a black and white, and send that shit to Mazda!! $$$ shot.

Absolutely fantastic idea. I actually was thinking of doing something similar to that, but also having some waterproof strips of lighting laid down on the ground to help illuminate the water that would be splashing up. Oh, and I'd do it at dusk too.

Thx yeah I still have the stockers, I might powdercoat them dark for a set of winter wheels. I like the RX-8s but I admit the paint job isn't awesome and I wish they were new, sorta. The trouble with used wheels is you never know how good the base paint is/was. They look pretty good though, only I pick on them ;-)
