I just bought a 1997 mazda 626,automatic transmission, 4 cilinder, it has about 120,000 miles. When i turn it on it shifts perfect into all gears, then it will completely stop moving in any position including reverse, so i turn it off then back and on and it shifts perfectly, then after a while it will do the same thing, i dont know if its soemthing electrical or what, any help would be greatly apreciated.

As i have seen, the automatic transmissions are known to have problems in 626's (i have a 2001 626 and have trans issues of my own). Does it have overdrive? if it does, try turning it off and see if that helps at all. it looks like a doozy of a problem, you might want to try and get your money back from whoever you bought it from. sounds like you got shafted.

did turning the OD do anything ? i'd check the fluid first, you may be low on ATF. i had a similar problem before with my trans and it ended up needing to be replaced. check the fluid though before you do anything expensive.

if you have to replace it, switch to manual ;) it'll last you longer.
