View Full Version : Day 1 and my exhaust is coated with soot! Normal? (and breakin question)

I know that the guys at the dealership thrashed the car a couple of times before I got it. I'm concerned that the appropriate break in procedure was not followed.

I'm sure that's not the cause of all the soot I'm seeing ( at less than 50 miles) but I'm worried about the long term effects that the salespeople may have caused.

Is the soot normal? Is the engine calibrated to run rich? Any problems from that?

Yup, soot is completely normal.

As far as break in, you will hear opinions all over the place on how it should be done. Some will say drive it like you stole it right off the lot, others will say to baby it for the first 1000 miles or so. There is nothing you can do to undo any potential damage that was done prior to you owning it, so I say just break it in as instructed in the manual.

Well, it's pretty much a fact that the MS3 runs rich from the factory, hence the soot.

Edit: beat me to it

Well I got a test drive "mule" that had 250miles on it when I got it. and I dynoed it stock the other day at 247whp. So from that I would guess it had been beat on and it seems to be putting out good hp numbers so I would say that the hard break in seems to work.

It doesn't. My patch is on the wall in a frame. It makes it so I can pay your place of employment to pay you to turn wrenches so I don't have to. (freak)

i enjoy working on cars, i also enjoy not having to pay other pple to do it. DUnno what u guys do, cars have always just been something thats easy for me, its like second nature. I wear a suit during the week and turn wrenches in my garage on the weekends. I can even spell wrenches properly. ;)

I was a tech while I was in college. I was also ASE certified but only in brakes and suspension/steering.

I worked too hard for the money I made. Partially because I was not as fast as the seasoned techs, and partially because I was spending a 1/3rd of my pay when the snap on truck pulled in. Making 6 figures as a tech isn't hard. Not spending half of it in your first 3 years on tools is.

*edit: I was not making anywhere near 6 figures. I wasn't implying that. :)

i hear ya on the snap on truck, it's like a kid in a candy store. But i try to keep a list in my box of stuff i come across and need but dont have and go from there.

Hmmm... new tools.

As for break in.... Make sure ur easy on the brakes the first 500 miles. Long slow stops, etc. to break the pads in on the rotor and so you don't warp your brand new rotors

Alot of ppl say to be easy on the car (shift under 4k rpms) for the first 500-1000 miles so all the seals and what not inside the engine can be seated properly. Even race engines have break in periods... even if they are on dyno's.

Also be gentle on the clutch until it gets all broken in as well.

the soot is normal... and a pain in the ass to clean. i got a seperate sponge for the soot and tailpipe when i wash the car.

Wish i had an ASE patch or two, but i'll had a mech. engineering degree in a few years... so thats close enough.

Spelling and grammar looks to be a lost art.

For new brake pads to function at peak efficiency you should perform a bedding in procedure.

Unfortunately, literacy is not so important anymore. Blame that on our crappy education system and the FCAT.

In Cali, more importance is placed in science and math and less in other areas.

Actually, I mostly blame parents for that. I have a 7 year old daughter that can read anything you put in front of her. She may not understand all of the words or meanings, but she can read anything. She can also write and spell most words that she uses on a daily basis.

Why she can do this is mostly because my wife and I worked with her over the past few years. No, she is not home schooled. We just always made learning a priority for her, and now she thoroughly enjoys it.

That said, half of her first grade class is borderline retarded. The teachers do their best to get the students caught up, but they showed up to first grade barely knowing their own names. For this I blame the parents. Too much Wii, not enough reading, writing, etc. Don;t get me wrong, we have a Wii and my daughter loves it, it just comes after homework.

Sorry for the rant, I am just sick of parents who do nothing for their kids and blame everyone else when they are way behind my kids in school. It's up to you to ensure your kids do well in everything they do.

I gave up on trying to polish it all the time because I drive it around the block and it blacks out again, so I just let it build up and turn the whole thing black to match the black-on-red color scheme. ;)

Nahhh, I do wash it here and there. Its normal so Im not so worried about it, but I really need to get a tune so I can adjust that air/fuel ratio. Stuff drives me insane.

stuff

you said it.

My mom made sure I spoke clearly, used proper english and grammar, and formed sentences correctly. I still struggle with the latter. She told me that I may grow up to be an idiot, but I won't sound like one. :)

My highschool teacher once failed me on a grammar paper because even though all the sentences were grammatically correct, they made no sense. I was bored and decided to have fun by making sentances that were funny and pointless but made sure to use proper grammar. He didn tlike that. Fuckin commie.

Just proof that you dont have to sounds smart to be smart. ;)

..... though I dont think thats SwampAss' case. ;) lol

Grammer is over-rated on the internet. As long as you get your point across and it's not a resume, paper, important document, etc. then who cares.

I might start another off topic argument, but it seems everyone always has someone or something to blame for their short comming (in this case reading and writing of people). no one can just take the blame for themselves.

What did Teddy say? "The buck stops here."

While I generally agree with that statement, sometimes people's posts are hard to read because the grammar or spelling is just so bad. I also to feel that anything I say or type is a reflection on me, and therefore have decided to speak and type in a manner that I think reflects my intelligence.

It's hard not to read some of these posts littered with misspellings and poor grammar and not think of the poster as less intelligent than they may actually be. I try, but I often fail.

I couldn't agree more.

I have had numerous college students turn in poorly written (both grammatically and otherwise) papers and then complain when I took off points. Keep in mind these were all science courses. Despite this, I don't think that is an excuse for poor writing. They would often protest, "This isn't English!" I would reply, "You are in college, and you need to write like an educated person." The protests would usually end there. If not, I would ask them to bring in a journal from JAMA, National Geographic, Scientific American, or the like, and ask them if the articles were sophomorically written simply because they were "science" articles. End of discussion....
