View Full Version : J and S Knockbox/Safeguard Help

I recently got a J and S Safegaurd, but need the instructions (yes yes i checked his website but they are not there for the protege). Anyone have a copy handy the only one i been able to find are some ones for the MP3 (is it the same?)

Also anyone ever wire one of these in and if so, where did they mount the unit? I am pretty decent with wiring but i do have a few questions about where to wire in the coils, is it just right at the ECU harness thats inside the car? Or somewhere on the coil itself?

yea its inside the car on the ecu harness going to the ecu im almost positive thats where you do it.

Ok so doing some more research, this is what i came up with (see pics). The instructions that i found online were a bit confusing i mean i think my way is just easier to read/understand.

Just a few more questions if someone, or even John @ J and S can answer.

1. I have a Unichip should i install this into the Harness BEFORE the unichip? or install this into the unichip PnP Harness?

2. WTF is the TP pin on the J and S? (pin 1 see my pic)

3. What is the MAP limiter for? and do i need to use it?

4. Do i need to run the O2 clamp? Because i know the J and S has issues with the AFC and O2 clamp (since it uses the TPS signal) what about the Unichip? Would this eliminate fuel cut for me (i assume the fuel cut is related to a O2 voltage maxxing out)?

5. The coils are they wired up here @ the ECU or should i be doing them closer or ON the coil itself somehow?

6. Where did people mount their Knockboxes?

Heres the pics, hopefully it helps to understand my situation. Please tell me if my ECU pinouts are wrong as well. THANKS

dude if all you want is the knock retard when it sees knock all you have to hood up is the power,ground,knock sensor,and the coil wires and you would want to hook it up after the unichip on the ecu harness not the unichip harness. look at it like this the unichip can alter timing so if you want the j&s to do its job you want it to intercept the timing signal after the unichip has allready made the change that way if you do knock the j&s can cut it because if you put it before the unichip the j&s would try and make the change but the unichip would override it

I've got the install instructions right here in my hand, but I'm too wiped to scan/resize/upload/post right now (It's 4 -5 pages). I promise I'll put 'em up here tomorrow afternoon (I mean this afternoon lol). I'll be installing mine down the line and may have some questions - just trying to pay it forward.

i have the same instructions that he has for the mp3. you proabably have the same ones too. look at it like this ppl swap ecus all the time if the harnesses were different we wouldnt be able to swap ecu's as freely as we do so the wiring for the j&s that applies ot the mp3 applies to the msp,p5,ect.

I was told exactly this directly from J&S. Even though the instructions say "MP3", the unit is for all 3rd-gen 2.0 Pros.
