It looks like the inter cooler is mounted above the enigine? and housed in a big unrully plastic ducting with a small air inlet and no air exit.
seems horidly inefficient.
Someone has to have a kit to relocate the intercooler to a better spot.

The thermo plastic cover you refer to is the intake air guide for the inter cooler. Do not remove it. The outlet is under the intercooler. Air comes into the the intercooler via the air guide, goes through the intercooler and exits the intercooler on top of the engine. A good design in my opinion compared to a hood scope. Kind of grew on me, and now I like it although it covers the very nice aluminum engine.

I think the plastic cover looks halfway decent and looks like it works well.(headbang)

and they do have a kit to relocate the intercooler
its called a front mount intercooler
search for it

Or it needs more "ram air" setup like the MS3.(wiggle) One of my favorite things on my car.
