Floor Mat Surprise - What the heck is this?

My roommate and I were driving home from In-N-Out last night when he noticed something was uneven under my floor mat. So he pulled everything out to reveal this:

What the hell is it?

I bought this car used and the first owner was the Mazda Race Team at Laguna Seca. Second owner is in LA.

We suspect it's an aftermarket ECU.

Looks like the factory ECU. From the pics, looks like it's in the passenger footwell, up against the firewall. That's the palcement for it. Not sure what the writing is for. Maybe it's an MSP ECU......says from 03.5......

You should be able to use the part number to match it up.

Well, that's definitely an ECU for the Protege... Not sure if they've tweaked it at all. Pretty much, you can speculate all you'd like, but without calling the Mazda Race Team, to get an answer, all that speculation will be just that. =)
