I have the sways and they work very very well. I had some installation issues, but I believe they have been fixed. The install is a PITA though.

The rear is cake. It'll take 1/2 hour if you take your time. To put in the front, you have to drop the front sub-frame in order to get the bar in and out. It's like a 4 hour job and will probably cost you some skin off your knuckles and a bit of paint off your shiny new bar too.

It's going to be tough. If it is really important (who's gonna see it anyway?) wrap the whole thing in heavy tape while putting it in. The other possibility I can think of is to disconnect everything so you can drop the sub-frame all the way out of the car. Then the installation should be easy without scratching anything, but it's a lot more work.

I dont know if its really worth it, the bar gets all dirty in 20 miles anyway.

Vendors can not post prices because certain manufacturers have restrictions on what prices can be advertised to maintain a fair market. Legislation was recently passed making it possible to manufactureres to take legal action againts resellers who break this rule-- so its pretty important.
yes the price is better than my website price, I will send you a PM.

It depends on what you want. The Hotchkiss "soft" setting is similar to the Cobb "stiff". I believe that setting is quite good for the street. If you are road racing, the Hotchkiss one is probably more appropriate.

you will not, i repeat, will NOT get the front bar in without losing paint off the bar. unless you want to disconnect the steering rack to completely drop the subframe...
it took me about 2 hours to do the front today. kurt (subparpunk) was a huge help. couldnt have done it without him. but the hardest part is the drivers side swaybar bracket bolt... the front one is in just a pain to reach spot (i used a open ended socket wrench, and a rubber mallet to break it loose, then a swivel/extension combo to get it out.)
at one point i thought i broke my hand, lost a bit of blood (passenger side swaybar bracket).. then another point i lost some skin on both arms.. (drivers side swaybar bracket)
My impressions of the bars are good. Its hard to make whats good better, and hotchkis did that. the stock swaybars are stiff, and handle well. when you hit a turn the car cuts where you want it to go, rolls, and then finally goes where you want to go. with the hotchkis bars it cuts, and goes... no roll. this is on the stock springs and shocks (debating on coilovers or cobb springs).
hope this helps, feel free to PM me any install questions... ill give you what tips i can.

A popular mod on VW golfs is to just do the rear swaybar. I understand that there are certainly differences between the cars, but would anyone recommend just doing the rear bar? I don't race or autocross. I just goof off on back roads.
I also understand this would greatly affect the cars tendency to go from under steer to over steer.

Swampy, when I had my Forester, I installed a 22mm solid bar (stock was a hallow 17mm, I believe). It made a world of a difference. Generally, the rear bar does more than the front bar. Install the rear bar first, then the front if you feel you need less roll. Chances are, you will be thrilled with the effects of the rear bar.
Aaron, please PM me a price on just the rear.

Swamp,
I wish I could help. I had just the rear on, but every time I was in the car, my G/F was with me, and I couldnt really get a "rear swaybar only" impression, and ill be damned if im taking off the front one to let you know. ;)
When I had my audi (1.8t a4) I did just the rear swaybar, great upgrade. but this was on a very floaty, soft stock suspension.
I will tell you, you REALLY have to push the car hard to get to a point where the stock setup fails and the hotchkis keeps going. It does help throughout, however, the stock setup is good to begin with.

Swamp - the Hotchkis and Cobb bars have different front to rear stiffness ratios, so they should have somewhat different effects on handling for the die hards like the serious autocrossers who need to be able to throw the tail out in a controlled manner. I have no idea which would be better. As far as putting in just a rear bar, that is what I did, and I was very impressed with the change it made. The car tracked much flatter.
The Cobb rear bar has two settings. If you look at the stiffness ratio of their bars front to rear, it appears that the milder setting used with a factory front bar would establish about the same stiffness balance front to rear as the rear bar on its heavy setting and a cobb front bar (no adjustability). I believe this is the reason for the two settings on the rear bar.
I also modded my suspension for the same use as you.

While I certainly didn't ignore this install tip I found the stock bar came off with the rear wheels unweighted and the new bar went on with the wheels unweighted.
However, I had one side in the stiff setting and the other side in the stiffer setting and for the life of me, couldn't get either side out to match them up UNTIL I put weight back on the wheels.

Most of the time FedEx won't leave the package on your step unless you sign the little door tag they leave.
We can set-up an alternate address for you, but you would have to pay with a CC to do it that way-- paypal can only go to the confirmed address.

the hotchkis bars are only available in a set of both the front and rear, the cobb is available as separate bars.
Just wanted to add that Aaron @ JSC is the shit. We worked out a great deal (I even offered to come pick up since I'd be in the area, but he was kind to point out it would be cheaper for me overall to ship, though I'm sure that's more work on his end). He even rushed getting it out so it would leave that day and I received it the next day. I'm one of those people that really, really appreciates great customer service as well as price, and Aaron delivered on both.

Thanks Kain! We pride ourselves on being prompt with shipping and keeping as much as we can in stock in our 17,000 square foot warehouse. These days there are too many 'vendors' running online shops from their basements and really don't care when you get your parts once you have paid. Is the stock setup on a Speed 3 so bad that you need a rear sway bar? Assume I don't do any Autocross or track racing. Sure I take it on some back roads from time to time, but I am not trying to get myself killed. I thought the Mazda folks went to great lengths to stiffen up the Speed 3 and give it some pretty good handling characteristics. I could be wrong...
SwampAss
08-28-2008, 11:29 AM
No, but the stock set up is "safe" vs. "optimal".
I prefer the flat feeling the car has with the after market bar. It's noticeable even at legal speeds. My ride to work is very curvy. I like the feedback it gives. Track/lap times are not my concern at all. The car may be worse for all I know. For the type of street driving I do with the occasional assing off, I couldn't be happier with the upgrade.

I thought the Mazda folks went to great lengths to stiffen up the Speed 3 and give it some pretty good handling characteristics. I could be wrong...
The stock setup is great. For the street I would not recommend a sway upgrade, unless you desire less body roll. If you are satisfied with it, why change it? I would definitely not recommend a rear only as you change the balance of the car.
What is your first reaction when you go into a corner faster than you are comfortable with? Lift off the throttle? Maybe even stab the brake? With a stiffer rear sway you are more likely to induce throttle-lift oversteer in exactly that situation. It is more wise to upgrade front and rear at the same time, if you feel the need to upgrade.
For autocross, a stiffer rear sway can be fun. But there is also a school of thought that goes to a BFB, Big Front Bar only for FWD cars. The logic here is that the stiffer front end will help the tires grip better, because of the compound affect of less body roll (less weight transfer) and help keep the camber from going towards the positive. The result is less stress to the tire and more grip. This formula works for a lot of national caliber autocross drivers. So does a BRB.
For me, I like backroads driving, and I enjoy track days immensely. I'm finding a lack of grip at the front end to be frustrating at the track. I am considering upgrading both of the sway bars to reduce body roll. If the rear bar in soft setting turns out to be too stiff I may pull it for the cobb or back to stock. I agree with swampass - the car does feel more enjoyable to me when it has less body roll.
