If there was any doubt Porsche was developing a second SUV model positioned below the Cayenne, these latest spy images of a new prototype at the Nurburgring can finally put an end to the uncertainty. Rumors of a baby Cayenne date back more than a year and the car’s existence has continually been denied by Porsche including by its CEO Wendelin Wiedeking.
However, since Porsche increased its stake in Volkswagen, the sports carmaker has been given access to a number of new vehicle architectures and components including the premium midsize SUV structure from the recently revealed Audi Q5. Just as the Cayenne was based on the same Q7/Touareg design, the new baby Cayenne could adopt Q5 running gear.
Tipped as a hard-core performance crossover that could also share powertrains with the much larger Cayenne, the new model will likely feature both V6 and V8 engines in both naturally aspirated and turbo forms. Power levels will range from about 280hp from an entry-level V6 and could top out at close to 500hp in a twin-turbo V8 model. The line-up will include Porsche’s new direct-injection technology as well as the carmaker’s new dual-clutch gearbox, which is expected to debut in the facelifted 911 range. Expect to see 0-60mph times of under five seconds for top end models and max speeds in excess of 180mph.
The car could also see the introduction of Porsche’s first diesel as well as a hybrid variant but the launch of such models would be at least a year after the SUV’s initial debut, sometime late next year.

Actually, it's an Audi Q5 with a Porsche badge, but I'm sure it will get some badass drivetrain options that you don't get in the Audi.

I don't get what Porsche/Audi/VW are doing here.
A few years back they had a combined total of ZERO SUV's.
Then came the Touareg and the Cayenne fine.
But by 2010 they will have a total of 6 SUV's?
Touareg, Tiguan, Cayenne, Little Cayenne, Q7, Q5.
What's the point?
Did VW not learn anything from the Phaeton (colossal failure) in that redundant vehicles aren't necessary?

I think this is one arena Porsche should've just stayed out of. IMO a properly equipped Toureg can be a nice looking SUV, but I've NEVER been able to warm up (or stand to look at) a Cayenne. They're just fugly from every angle. What we don't need is a Cayenne Jr., as ugly as it's mama. But hey, people buy them so there's no account for taste I guess.

and that's the whole point. the cayenne saved porsche's bacon, and thus, we still have an independent porsche that's able to turn out cars like the GT3 and cayman. personally, i'd rather have that porsche than an out-of-business or takeover-neutered Porsche that never made an SUV.
the phaeton comparison would make more sense if the cayenne wasn't a raging success. given porsche's recent success, i have confidence that some people know how to run a car company.

Don't forget the half million dollar Ferrari SUV that is coming out soon. The Fuoristrada unveiling should be Geneva 2010 if i recall.

To add to this, IIRC, Porsche turns the highest per car profit of any automaker and the Cayenne is a big part of that.
Edit: Yup, highest per car profit: $28,000/car.

Actually, thinking about it, the Cayenne is probably dragging that down. There's no way they make $28k on a $60-80k Cayenne.

they might...a lot of those parts are shared w/ the VW and the Audi, so it's probably not as expensive to build as it might otherwise be. plus, they sell a ton of 'em.
wow...$28k/car.
