Is it possible to take a gauge cluster from a Protege w/ tachometer and stick it in my Protege w/o tachometer and it work? Or there wiring involved?

Damn. How in depth is the wiring? I can handle a little splicing, but if its to hard I will probaly just leave it be...
Even though I cant find a guage overlay for the w/o tach cluster...

if you get a cluster from the same year, you should be fine. problems arise when you try to put a 99-00 cluster into a 01+ vehicle. (or vise-versa)
Its only 1 wire that needs hooked up, iirc. There's a write-up in the howto section. btw...I have an 00 cluster in my 02 and it works fine, except my hibeam reminder light stayed on. Easily fixed by taking the bulb out tho. :)

Thanks for the input guys. I dont think I am going to do it though. I forgot about the mileage part, another post I read reminded me. Guess its a big ugly dash tach for me :(. Still cant find any white-face or aftermarket overlays for the w/o tach though.
they're around. check ebay. I've got the tach-less cluster with white indiglo overlays. I'm using my scanguageII as my water temp/tach/voltage meter.

corksport has some for without the tach you just have to ask. As for your protege, what year? ive read you can get a 03 lx without keyless entry or the higher package dx cluster and put it into your car. If your mileage is manual, use a drill and run it backwards lol. If its digital ecu takes care of it. I considered the cluster with tach, but I already had a tach installed on my A pillar, so all is well. heres the corksport link : http://corksport.com/store/category/4qby/99p-interior.html

I put a 01-03 LX cluster in my 03 DX, no wiring needed. It's a direct plug and play.

WTF is the "higher package DX"?
The LX is the upgraded version of the DX LOL.

hmmm, learned something new about where the mileage is stored, I thought the ecu took care of the digital mileage gauge, or stored it. oh well. Lol, as for the higher package, i was mistakenly reading about the first gen dx's with the convenience package, I didnt realize my mistake till i went back and read it, (was following protegefaq.net = http://www.protegefaq.net/mods_int.html#tacho[/url] ). My bad. Ill try and post the pic for my A pillar setup, though Im about to switch it out with a pod for some more gauges, so dont mind how ugly it is when I post it. the closest I can get is the set for the pictures of my protege on my flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/meeseontheleese/sets/72157604086724879/)

Not going to mess with the cluster. I dont want to have an issue with the mileage. Awaiting A Pillar tach setup. Sounds cool...

Yeah, I had to use the mileage from the LX cluster. It was only 500 miles off, so it wasn't an issue for me. There is a write-up in the how-to thread about taking the cluster completely apart and swapping the mileage part, but I'm not that confident.
Your white DX looks nice. I would peel off the DX sticker though, and remove the side mouldings.

Thanks for the compliment, those are some what older pictures though. I removed the pinstripe and the dx badge a bit ago, and I have upgraded my suspension with some tien s springs and kyb gr2 struts, so shes a bit lower. Still have the molding though, not sure if I want to remove it, Im looking to keep the stock look so people under estimate me.

I think I have a pic in that flickr set that has my tach in there.... if not ill try and find one for you and link it. Sorry I didnt yesterday, work wore me out :(

home sick, so I was able to grab the pics. Keep in mind if you do some true a-pillar style, then yours will look better, and I cant atm for the life of me remember who it was that has painted full pillar pods (in fact I need to figure out what it was again so I can get my full pillar setup)
