View Full Version : Sticking caliper, uneven wear

I did a search for this but nothing really answered my question. my brakes are squeaking so I took it into my local garage that I trust. Turns out my front pads are wearing unevenly and they told me my caliper could be sticking and that new pads and rotors would only be a temporary fix the problem. I have 2 back to back road trips this and next weekend and need my P5 in tip-top shape. They quoted me $375 for new caliper, 2 new pads, labor and rotors.
I don't feel right about the situation. Can't uneven wear be the cause of the squealing. What would cause a sticking caliper? I was told dirt and corrosion in my brake line.
Any suggestions?

the piston in the caliper might be bad since the pads dont retract like it should , either way you need to change the shoes , so your mechanic could be right. change the shoes but tell him not to replace the rotors just shave them and change the caliper , it should be fine after that
hope this helps
I had this problem with my front left on my P5 and found out I over torqued the caliper when i replaced the rotors and pads. That price sounds pretty good though. My 626 had the same problem and it was over $1200 for a bunch of balony at 2 diff places.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll get it done tomorrow as I don't want to risk further damage to the car on the road trips.

Could just be a dirty slide pin(not sure if that's the exact term). Whoever replaced the pads last maybe didn't clean and grease them. That will keep them from retracting and cause excessive wear. Some aftermarket brake pads just squeal no matter what you do.

My rear calipers on my P5 were dragging.... the slide pins/boots were bone dry... sounds like all you need is the slide pins to be greased and your pads replaced as well as possibly machining the rotors... I dont think a caliper would need replacing if all its doing is sticking... my MX-3 had the same problem and all i needed was a caliper rebuild kit and some new pads...

well contact points are part of the problem so , who knows you cant really tell unless you see the problem

Got it all fixed today. They took $40 of the price so ended up paying $330 for new right front caliper, brake hose, set of front brake pads, adjusting rear brakes, replacing front brakes, installation of caliper and brakes getting bled. They also adjusted my e-brake which had been sticking (even though I use it every day). Despite the hit to the wallet, all seems to be well. squealing is gone and car rides and stops great. I'll just go easy on it until everything settles in. Hopefully the brakes will wear evenly now. Thanks for all the advice.

just the right front calipers? brake hoses ( not bad btw : D )
NOT BAD for that price although the left caliper should have probably have been done to be preventative : D

Yeah, but that would have been almost $700 and w I will be driving about 1800 miles over the next 2 weeks. With the price of gas, it would have put a squeeze on the finances. So I'll probably do the left one a few months from now.
So you think the price was fair?

Price was fair....I had to have both front calipers replaced (left had siezed) and that ran me $700 (new pads, rotors turned, fluid flush etc included)

wow 700 for all that ? wow , you dont need to replace the rotors unless they were already worked on
but what needs to be done has to be done : )

Rotors were turned, not replaced....the re-manf calipers were $115 ea, and the pads are ceramic ($53/set, both sides done..)
