I drive an 03 2.0l dohc mazda protege. I have to admit, I do drive it pretty hard though, and I have put roughly 5k more miles since the 43,560 or so it started off with in januare, but I rarely push it above 4k. So far motor wise Ive only done 5.0 wires connected to bosch iridium plugs and an aem CAI. very recently (past 3 days its seems), Ive noticed that primarily around the end of the day or at night, when Im driving I can be in low gear, yet hear a whining noise. It doesnt sound like metal against metal but more like possibly a belt. It can happen with low or high rpm's it doesnt matter. I know its not my intake because my intake has a deep throaty sound, and this is almost the opposite with a sort of high pitched whirring. I've heard it once before my alternator went out, but I just recently put in a new one, so im pretty sure its not that. If you guys can respond with what you think asap, I would greatly appreciate it.

Probably is your alternator thats why your hearing it at night cause you have the lights on which puts more load on the alternator.

im hoping thats the case. If so im curious as to why it seems to have gotten worse in the past few days. After the new alternator I never really heard it until recently...

I'm having the same issue with my MSP. After driving it for a while, it starts to make a sound that sounds like it would be a belt, almost like a saw going through wood, that high-pitched sound. It seems to do it more when I'm letting the car go into a lower gear to brake itself, but sometimes does it less when I'm not letting it do that. My battery light is on, but I had the guy at Advance Auto check everything and he said there were no problems at all with my battery or my alternator. Just got a forged engine put in, it has around 100 miles on it at the moment.

did you put a new water pump on as well? my water pump is making a whearing sound when i spin the pulley freely. i'm just going to slap a new belt on for now and drive it til the pump goes out. i just need my car for a couple more months before school starts again and i'll replace everything then!

Im pretty sure its my alternator guys. It only seems to be an issue when my fogs are on art starting up. Other than that, its virtually eliminated itself it seems.
