Codenamed internally as the GMX 206, the Cadillac CTS Wagon has clearly gone beyond the consideration phase within GM's hallowed halls and is actively being developed. This prototype was just caught by spy photographers and the profile is unmistakable evidence that the CTS will soon get some extra cargo space. Cadillac's plan to expand the CTS into a full-fledged lineup that can compete with the likes of the the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 hinges on producing more variants than just the sedan. The CTS Coupe Concept was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in January, so it's no surprise that we're seeing the wagon in development now and we would expect a convertible version of the coupe eventually, as well. Sources say that Cadillac will build around 10,000 - 12,000 units of the CTS wagon at the same Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant as the sedan and coupe, with most of those being earmarked for sale in Europe. And we have to say that the Family Truckster has never looked so sharp.

Hell yes. GM finally got one right. Now just offer the "Fender Vent Delete" option, and I'm ready to sign for one.

Fan-fricken-tastic. I agree about the fender vent, but can almost deal with it on the new CTS. Can't wait to see the final version!

Yeah, I've seen a lot of these on the road lately, and they're sexy enough that I can overlook the vent. Coming from me, that means a lot.

This will probably look nice but I still lean towards a smaller wagon (3-series/A4). I think a Legacy GT size wagon is as large a vehicle as I will buy. (shrug)

I think the CTS is a little larger than a 3/A4 but a fair bit smaller than a Legacy.
BTW, you can't buy a Legacy wagon anymore, only Outbacks.

I'll wait to see if Pontiac does get the Commodore sport wagon as a G8 in the next couple of years.

By "large" I refer to dimensions and mass.
A4 Wagon: 180.6 in Long, 3671 lbs
3-series Wagon: 178.2 in Long, 3527 lbs
Subaru Legacy GT Wagon 188.7 in Long, 3355 lbs
Caddilac CTS Sedan: 191.6 in. Long, 3861 lbs (Wagon probably longer/heavier).
I know there is no more GT Wagon...unfortunately.

I figured. Its to bad Subaru killed off the Leg wagon. So I guess I'll be looking for a used one unless I get an Outback XT.

A Jalopnik reader purportedly got hold of a Harris Opinion Survey about the upcoming CTS wagon, and assuming it's on the level, it brings forth a treasure trove of information. For example, as you can see above, it seems we now have a first look at official imagery of the CTS in 2-box guise. We like what we see...perhaps even more than we like the CTS Coupe. We especially dig the way those super-tall taillamps look from behind. We'll reserve final judgement for whenever Cadillac officially unveils the car, but things appear to be proceeding very nicely.
Underhood, the doc tells us that it's going to be direct-injected engines only. A 3.0L V6 producing 260 horses replaces the current, non-DI 3.6 as the base mill, with the now-familiar 304-horse 3.6L again assuming the top spot. Both will be connected to 6-speed automatics, and highway mileage is said to be 27 mpg. 25 cubic feet of your stuff will fit behind the second row, and if you flip those back seats down, cargo capacity increases to 58 cubes. A power liftgate ensures you won't strain yourself opening the rear hatch. According to the leaked materials, pricing will range from $37,500 to $42,500.
Will Americans embrace a new luxury wagon? We're gonna find out soon enough.

The economy is weakening, recession is imminent, gas is over $4, and GM thinks the American middle class wants this??
This is yet again another pure example of GM missing the beat 2 years later. The Dodge Magnum was a hit, now it's extinct. I guess they're expecting to fill the void by offering a GM wagon but only even MORE expensive.
The people who would be buying this, would rather buy a Mercedes or BMW M wagon.

People are already trading in SUVs for wagons. I do not think GM missed the boat. Chrysler should bring back the Magnum. Which sold really well where I live.
There are scores of wagons and sportwagons on the road here in New England. Everything from Mazda6s to Outbacks to Magnums and BMW and Benz Tourings.
I can see a market for this car.

Maybe elsewhere, but people will laugh at this in MI. I'm no domestic-hater. I've been a long-time customer. I'm just a frustrated previous customer of theirs that wishes they'd get a clue. These days, they're running on borrowed time and that RenCen building will be up for rent if they don't get their act together.
Their money makers were in high-volume cars. Not expensive speciality cars. They need a high-volume, popular, affordable and reliable line up. Not one or two specialty cars that will supposedly turn things around.
Just my $.02. Of course, I could be completely wrong and it'll sell like crazy.

i'm confused. what should they build? should cadillac put out a 4-cylinder economy car?
BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, and the rest sell the hell out of midsize wagons, and i've seen the infiniti EX popping up all over the place.

GM is rather a big monster so I'm sure the Cadillac sister divisions (i.e. Chevy) are more worried about developing a high-volume, popular, affordable and reliable line-up. My guess is that if Cadillac does that, it will lose its identity.
The latest Cadillacs (and of course the CTS) have been highly regarded in their own segment, so that, and the SUV sales decline, may give Cadillac a good chance of doing well with the wagon (although there is no 6MT like for its CTS brother (protest))
...Oh, and for small cars made by Cadillac, don't forget the 4cyl Cimarron, not a good reference ;)...

I wasn't trying to imply that Cadillac should make 4cyl econo cars. I just think GM's priorities may not be in order. Gas is through the roof yet they think they are going to compete with the Mustang and sell Camaros like hotcakes. I hate to say it but it isn't going to happen. The timing is all wrong yet again. They too much too late. Not profitable. And they wonder why they are in the situation they are in. Consumers are wising up and its time I feel GM should do the same really. Thats what I meant out of my criticism.

The Camaro was too far along in the pipeline by the time that the whole fuel crisis hit, so it was too late, and I think they realize at this time that it's extremely poor timing. Still, GM has needed something to show consumers that they can make good cars, and, speaking at the very least for myself, their newer cars like the CTS are doing that.

the camaro will do just fine. there are plenty of well-heeled older buyers out there who will spring for one for (faster, more comfortable, more reliable) a trip down memory lane. plenty of automakers are having no trouble unloading mega-HP cars, b/c the buyers either figure it's worth paying for the extra fuel, or aren't really affected by the gas prices. the camaro was never going to be a big volume seller for a company like GM anyway.
i agree w/ tinman; the image and positive press (and showroom visits) generated by the camaro are at least as important as the sales figures.
