View Full Version : Strange Sound, is it Brakes?

So for about a week now I have been hearing a light metal scraping/grinding noise coming from my drivers side front wheel. The noise seems to be activated mostly by turning left but it can happen even going straight too. The strange thing is when I apply some brake it goes away, thus leading to believe it isn't my brakes because I would think the noise would occur when I apply the brakes. Anyone have any ideas? I really don't have the cash to just have a garage drive it around and listen but I am a little worried. Thanks for any insight!

Mods, I probably should have posted this in the problems forum. Can you move it please? Thanks!

I don't want to scare you but I've had that similar sound from the front. It hasn't been proven yet but it could be your LSD going out. Shortly after I started hearing the sound my diff went out. I got it replaced, new clutch, and whatever else mazda replaces and the sound is gone. I hope I am wrong and it's not your lsd but it very well maybe. Start saving your money.
Have you replaced the diff yet in your car? how many miles?

I just had to have my front left rotor turned. It had a little lip in the front and backside edge and would rub the inside of the caliper. Same thing constant light squeeling then apply brakes and it goes away. See if there's a little lip!

Thanks for the tips, took a look at the rotor and sure enough there was a lip, pretty good sized one actually. I'm just gonna replace both front rotors. Thanks!

This might be a slight thread jack but i have a light grind/squeel all the time since I replaced my front brakes. I figured it would just go away with use but no after a couple weeks. How do you adjust the front breaks? I have EBC slotted rotors with premium munroe ceramic pads.

did you use any lubricants when you changed the breaks? Did you do both the rotors AND the pads or one or the other?

I changed the brakes and the rotors at once. EBC drilled and slotted with premium ceramic pads. I didn't use any lubrication at all, what should be lubricated?

Your caliper sliders and the metal seats where the pads slide (forgot what they're called).
