View Full Version : 01 LX gauge luster in 99 DX ???
I tried to read up, on what I could find, and it seams that I could swap a 99 DX cluster for a 99 LX cluster with no problem. It even seams that I can take both of them appart, reuse my DX main-board, and reassemble the LX cluster on it, thus retaining my original mileage... please correct me if I'm wrong on this
I was also wondering if I could do the same with an '01+ cluster. They look better, and there's a lot more of them out there. Would I be able to reuse my '99 DX cluster circuit-board to reassemble an '01+ LX cluster on it?
I really want a tach, and I want to keep my original miles, but I don't want one of those add-on tachometers.
anyone know anything about this?
Does this mean no one here knows jack about this?
Someone... please :(
I really like the 01-03 clusters, but I don't want to buy one, and then end up not being able to use it.

if you want to swap them out for the tach, then dont bother. some of the wiring inside the cluster is different enough to make them incompatible. since your dx has no tach, you cannot swap out just the gauges to retain your mileage because of how the circuit board is laid out. you will have to swap out the entire thing. best bet would be to find the cluster that you want from the same model year, with mileage that is close to what you have, and swap the whole thing in there.

on my 00 DX I had a 03 mazdaspeed cluster. everything worked except for the tach, but i just ran the signal wire from the diagnostics port on the engine bay to the cluster and it worked perfectly.
Another thing that was kind of annoying was that the interior light did not turn on when you opened any of the doors, so there was something different in the wiring.

the interior lighting on the 01+ protege's goes through the cluster - the 99-00 ones might be the same, but follow a different path
ok, so I guess I'll just try to find a 99-00 LX cluster with with as close to 99500 miles as I can.
Thanks everyone :)
Oh, one more thing...
Does it matter if it's from auto or manual?
My dad's is auto, and looks just like a munual, no gear indicator. Does that mean they're the same?
I found this cluster...

That's said to be out of a 2000 Mazda Protege (manufactured in 7-28-99)
with 89K miles and automatic transmission.
w/o keyless entry.
From what I read, this should be a perfect replacement,
except that in the picture it looks like a 01-03 Cluster, not 99-00.
If someone can vouch that this is a 2000 gauge cluster, I'll pick it up right now.
Could this be from a 2000 ES?
I know for a fact that a 99 LX looks a lot more plain.
Also, if it is from a 2000, would it still light up green?
I want to keep it green, since I'm not planning on swaping out the center console or anything else.

that looks to be a 99/00 ES cluster.
will it still light up green?

yes it will

the 2000 cluster won't work with the 99... the electrical system is quite different from the 2000 on the 99
That sucks 'cause I just bought it :(
Are you 100% sure about it? Anyone else to voutch for this?
I guess I'll have an ES cluster for sale or trade in a few days :)

i still think it might work. try it out once you receive it.
I will, I hope it works.
I'm fairly new at driving stick, so to me a manual with no tach is like driving with one eye closed.
I know you can hear and feel it, but it's a bit different when there's loud music playing and you're sitting in traffic :D

I swapped my 99 ES cluster with a cluster from an 02 P5. The straight up swap caused the high beam, brake light, and temp gauges not work properly. Solution was to mix and match parts from the two clusters. If I remember off the top of my head, I used the white piece of plastic from the P5, the 99ES circuit board, P5 Bezel, P5 faces, swapped to the red P5 bulbs, and used the P5 clear back piece. Since you have a DX, if it doesn't have a tach, I'm not sure if you can swap parts out, but you can look. It is very simple to disassemble the cluster, just take your time and pay attention to which screw comes out of each hole. Took me roughly 30-45min to do the whole project.
I see...
I suppose I'll to a bit more reading, but more than likely this will be up for sale in a few days :(
...or trade for 99 LX cluster.

yeah, but, you started with a tach cluster, and he has no tach - none of this is relevant to him.

I just noticed something, you said you tried putting an '02 sluster in a '99.
It seams that all the clusters that are being sold are grouped into either 99-00 or 01-03.
I suppose there's still a slight chance it might work.
When your high beams, brake lights and other stuff started not working, did you blow any fuses?
I don't want to do any permanent damage.

that cluster has raised ring edges around the 3 areas. the 99-00 to my knowledge do not come like that and that is why we couldnt use Dave B's gauge rings.
That's what I thought too, but I guess we'll see.

I didn't blow a fuse, the 01-03 clusters use a little different circuit board/signals, not sure what the differences are. Nothing was broken either, all that happened was the temp gauge read above hot, the brake light was always on, and the high beams light did not come on with the high beams. And to solve it all I just mixed and matched parts from the two clusters until I got everything to work. You might just want to see if you can find a 99-00 cluster with a tach. Or if you want the white faces you're going to have to buy two clusters. That was just my suggestion for you, good luck.
no, no white face gauges for me.
I guess I'll see what happens with this one since it claims to be a 00 cluster manufactured in 99.
Maybe they just used a generic picture, and it actually is the plain looking one, which would normally piss me off, but seing how the one in the picture migh not even work for me, I might be better off with the plain one.
All I have to say is as long as it all works, and has a tach, I'll be happy.
