lol. yeah that was a stock tranny with stock gears except the first 2 were cryo treated. now I know I can just replace that gear but there is no point just to pull it off in a month to fix something else. so one guy at the shop I'm doing this at says he got connects in europe and in jersey that can get a custom bad ass tranny thats gonna fit to the protege

Make sure you inspect everything real good! Didn't you say you had a grinding in all gears even when in neutral. Check the gear that meshes with the LSD crown wheel to make sure it hasn't been chipped.

So what are you plans for this tranny?

shane02pro5
04-21-2008, 02:41 PM
By the way that's fairly common for when 3rd goes mine looked the same way my first time totally stripped. Then just recently only 1 3rd gear had 2 teeth chipped out which is amazing that it didn't cause more damage since I drove it that way for a few months by just avoiding 3rd altogether

yeah I checked that out and all the teeth looked good but when you look at 3rd gear most if not all the teeth are either smooth or chipped. but I dont know what I'm doing with this tranny cuz this dude I know said he got hook ups in UK and can get me a good deal on a stage 3 racing tranny and stronger axles for a good price so he just waiting on a quote from them but if it gets too expensive I might just redue this one

TurbomanProtege
04-23-2008, 08:44 AM
I was looking into PAR gears and that s*** is expensive for 3rd and 4th gear its like 1100 bucks but I'm still waiting how much the racing tranny is gonna be but I'm finding out today hopefully its gonna be a better deal

shane02pro5
04-23-2008, 11:35 AM
Definately find out and share all the specifics on this racing tranny before you buy!

There aren't many options for this car. Pretty much GTX gears or PAR. The GTX gears are only a little better with a slightly beefier tooth profile.

Kooldino
04-23-2008, 11:51 AM
Eh, that's not THAT bad...you still have some teeth left on the gears!

PAR gears are your only real solution. Yeah, they're expensive. But guess what? I've been stripping gears off like that for over 3 years now. And you know what? You're going to strip them every 6 months or so with stock gears. Save yourself the money, time, and aggravation and just go with the PAR gears. I have them in stock and ready to ship.

well I finally got a response from the guy in UK and it is way to expensive to get that racing tranny he was telling me about. but I talked to a local guy I know that specializes in trannys and he says that he'll completely forge the internals of my tranny if I fix his car (a 99 bmw) so basically he fixes my car and I fix his car

Why is it so difficult to get forged gears? With our cars it should be just as common as rods... well not totoaly but kind of...

I haven't killed my tranny yet but im not running that much power. GL on your shit though bud!

TurbomanProtege
04-23-2008, 10:38 PM
dont know why but hopefully it'll do the trick for a while so I dont go through this again, but by friday I'm going to find out what gears exactly I'll be using and pinion shafts too

Speed3.5
04-26-2008, 01:58 AM
how much would he charge to do MSP's forge gears ??

I had a guy here too , who promised me a great deal to get a forged/strong tranny made from EUROPE but the thing was about the time , they tend to take time and i can't stay under for too long since this is my only DD.

good luck , keep us updated!!!

TurbomanProtege
04-26-2008, 02:39 AM
yeah but the dude thats gonna forge my tranny is here locally and we basically trading labor cuz he brought in his bmw with some head problems so he's gonna forge my tranny while I fix his head I'm shooting for like a week til I get this all done but aint no telling.

So this guy is making you a custom forged gear box in exchange for head work? Did i miss something here?

Sounds like you would be making out in the deal.

its basiclly like that cuz he specializes in transmissions and doesnt know to much bout motors and I specialize in motors an dont know to much about transmissions so we kind of helping each other out. so he's gonna look at what needs to be changed but so far he's gonna change out 3rd 4th and 5th gear and maybe one of the pinion shafts and forge them, I dont know what kind of gears he'll be using but I know its not the stock ones.

if it works good maybe you could pass the info to other msp owners.

I kind of have a feeling that some terminology is being confused. You sure he's not trying to CRYO treat it?

TurbomanProtege
04-28-2008, 07:10 PM
the tranny specialised said he was forgeing it and I asked him cryo treat and he was like no forge

That picture looks just like my first tranny's 3rd gear, which is sitting in the back seat of my nissan sentra.....

Sad thing is I just blew up my second tranny tonight 5 minutes after I finished hooking my oil pressure guage up. Super gay. I had this tranny for maybe 3 months or about 8000 miles on top of the original 62k that were on it when i bought it....but i'm prolly putting 290whp down, so it was innevitable. Time to get a mx-6 tranny for the time being and build one of my other ones. I'm so pissed.

The shitty thing was I wasn't even getting on it when I noticed the mad fucked up clanking noise when I was coasting to a stop....same exact way the last tranny blew.

Yeah, its pretty quick for what it is.....I gotta upgrade this tranny though. I can rebuild an engine like its nothing, but I've never delved into the realm of transmission modification....I get nervous spending alot of money on something i've never done.....But I have 2 blown trannies so I guess I can practice a bit....If I can get someone to swap the gears on the shafts, I can probably get it back together using ALLDATAPRO. Anyone know how much that would cost just getting the gears pressed on? I need any advice I can get.
